Chrysler revenue slumps on new model launches

DETROIT/MILAN (Reuters) - Carmaker Fiat's first-quarter profit slumped more than expected as its U.S. unit Chrysler's sales suffered from the phase-out of the Jeep Liberty pending a new model launch.

"We knew we would be limping in the quarter. I just didn't think I was going to limp that much," said Sergio Marchionne, chief executive of both Chrysler and its parent Fiat, on a conference call with analysts and reporters.

Marchionne in January warned that Chrysler's first-quarter earnings would be down from a year earlier because of the expense of product launches and the fact that the Jeep Liberty SUV was no longer being produced.

The Liberty's successor, the Jeep Cherokee, was not sold in the first quarter and will not be sold until the third quarter.

But Marchionne said that there were delays in the production launches of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and RAM heavy duty trucks, which he said are among the highest profit-makers.

Fiat, which took control of the third-largest U.S. automaker when Chrysler emerged from a government-sponsored bankruptcy four years ago, stood by its financial forecasts for 2013 despite a worsening European car market and lower revenue in the U.S. for the first quarter.

Fiat sees full-year revenue in the 88 billion euro to 92 billion euro range, trading profit between 4 billion and 4.5 billion euros, and net industrial debt of about 7 billion euros.

Analysts had expected a weak quarter for the combined group, and the results came in below consensus.

Trading profit was 618 million euros, below the 720 million euros forecast by 21 analysts published on Fiat's website. Pre-tax profit came in at 160 million euros, compared to a forecast of 300 million euros by analysts.

At Chrysler, first-quarter net income fell 65 percent to $166 million from $473 million a year earlier. Net revenue slipped 6 percent to $15.4 billion.

Net debt was 7.10 billion euros, in line with forecasts, and higher than the 6.5 billion euros at the end of 2012.

Citi Research analyst Harald Hendrikse said the quarter's results again highlight Fiat's difficult debt issue.

"With debt at current levels, the company cannot compete in this industry longer term against giants like Volkswagen AG spending 16 billion euros on capital expenditures and research and development," said Citi in a note.

NARROWING EUROPEAN LOSSES

Fiat's European losses before interest and tax narrowed to 111 million euros, from a year-ago loss of 170 million euros, despite a 10 percent drop in industry sales in the region. Marchionne said he expects Fiat to narrow its operating losses in Europe further in 2013.

Fiat outperformed a dismal European car market with the launch of the new Fiat 500L small car, the company said.

Fiat, like competitors Ford , General Motors and Peugeot , is losing money in Europe as buyers delay purchases of new cars until the economy improves. Unlike rivals, however, Fiat has decided to invest in retooling its idled factories to ramp up volumes of higher-margin cars for export rather than close plants.

The company aims to break even in Europe by 2015 or 2016.

LOOKING AHEAD

Chrysler said it will increase vehicle shipments in the second quarter by at least 13 percent from the first quarter, to 650,000 vehicles up from 574,000 in the first quarter.

Marchionne said the Jeep Grand Cherokee, now that its launch delays are over, will show strong April sales, and that the biggest boost in Grand Cherokee sales will show in the third quarter.

Marchionne said in the coming quarters Chrysler will better match up production and retail sales performance.

"Close your eyes, plug your nose and move it on from here," said Marchionne to analysts on a conference call.

COMING TO AMERICA?

Looking further out into the future, Marchionne said he hopes to merge Fiat and Chrysler into one group and he hinted strongly that the combined company will be headquartered outside of its native Italy.

Many observers expect the merged company to be headquartered where Chrysler is now, in Auburn Hills near Detroit, and to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange and in Italy.

Marchionne said the merged company would be headquartered in the geographical region that has "the adequacy of capital markets (necessary to) support our operations going forward."

Marchionne said that "Europe is becoming a less and less relevant fact in the scheme of things" as its share of the global auto market diminishes.

Italy has been a particularly weak player in a weakening region for auto sales.

"Italy in 2012 represented 10 percent of the overall sales of this (Fiat) Group," aid Marchionne. "And I think it's a stark reality for someone who has been a Fiat aficionado all his life. This is a different house. It looks at the world in a completely different way."

Musical of 'Rocky' heading to Broadway

NEW YORK (AP) ? It's been a knockout in Germany. Now Sylvester Stallone hopes a musical based on his beloved boxing film "Rocky" will also be a hit on Broadway.

Producers said Sunday they plan to get "Rocky" up and punching at the Winter Garden by February following a successful debut in Hamburg last fall.

Based on the Oscar-winning 1976 film, the musical features a score by "Ragtime" veterans Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, and a story by Thomas Meehan, who wrote "The Producers" and "Hairspray."

Originally written in English but translated into German for its world premiere and billed as "Rocky: Das Musical," the show is produced by Stallone and Stage Entertainment USA.

"The reason I think it has worked so well there and why I think it'll work on Broadway is that, yes, it's a story about boxing, but the real story is actually an intimate, powerful and gritty and moving love story between two people who are both lonely and in a difficult place in their worlds," said Bill Taylor, managing director of Stage Entertainment USA. "They rescue each other. It's very uplifting."

The musical stays close to the film, which charted the rise and romance of amateur boxer and debt collector Rocky Balboa, played in Germany by Drew Sarich. No casting has been decided for New York.

In the story, Balboa, nicknamed the Italian Stallion, gets his shot against undefeated heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, played in the film by Carl Weathers. He also woos a love interest, Adrianna "Adrian" Pennino. Stallone wrote the screenplay and it won the best picture Oscar in 1976.

The film made famous the image of Balboa running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the quote "Yo, Adrian!" The German production kept the trumpet-laden funky theme "Gonna Fly Now" and the anthem "Eye of the Tiger," written for "Rocky III." Both will also be in the Broadway version.

The director is Alex Timbers, who directed Broadway's "The Pee-wee Herman Show" and directed and wrote the book for "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson." The boxing choreography is being done by Steven Hoggett, who choreographed "American Idiot," ''Peter and the Starcatcher" and "Once."

"This is not boxers doing a kick line," Taylor said. "It's stunning movement representing some of the sparring and the fighting. It's very, very cleverly created."

"Rocky" will be the first new tenant at the Winter Garden Theatre in years. The show that's been there since 2001, "Mamma Mia!," is transferring to another Broadway venue.

The musical will follow two other boxing-related works to appear on Broadway recently: Mike Tyson's one-man show about his life in and out of the ring, and a revival of Clifford Odets' "Golden Boy" about a young man torn between his natural talent as a violinist and the fast money of boxing.

Bangladesh building collapse death toll nears 350

SAVAR, Bangladesh (AP) ? Police in Bangladesh took five people into custody in connection with the collapse of a shoddily-constructed building that killed at least 348 people, as rescue workers admitted Saturday that voices of survivors are getting weaker after four days of being pinned under the increasingly unstable rubble.

Still, in a boost for the rescuers, 29 survivors were pulled out Saturday, said army spokesman Shahinul Islam.

Most of the victims were crushed by massive blocks of concrete and mortar falling on them when the 8-story structure came down on Wednesday morning -- a time many of the garment factories in the building were packed with workers. It was the worst tragedy to hit Bangladesh's massive garment industry, and focused attention on the poor working conditions of the employees who toil for $38 a month to produce clothing for top international brands.

Among those arrested Saturday were two owners of a garment factory, who a Dhaka court ruled can be questioned by police for 12 days without charges being filed. Also detained are two government engineers and the wife of the building owner, who is on the run, in an attempt to force him to surrender. Violent public protests continued sporadically in Dhaka and spread to the southeastern city of Chittagong where several vehicles were set on fire.

Working round-the-clock since Wednesday through heat and a thunderstorm, rescuers on Saturday finally reached the ground floor from the top of the mountainous rubble through 25 narrow holes they have drilled, said Brig. Gen. Ali Ahmed Khan, the head of the fire services.

"We are still getting response from survivors though they are becoming weaker slowly," he said, adding that rescue workers were now able to see cars that were parked at the ground level.

"The building is very vulnerable. Any time the floors could collapse. We are performing an impossible task, but we are glad that we are able to rescue so many survivors." He said the operations will continue overnight as chances fade of people surviving for a fifth day with possibly grievous injuries and the heat.

The building site was a hive of frenzied activity all day with soldiers, police and medical workers in lab coats working non-stop. Rescuers passed bottles of water and small cylinders of oxygen up a ladder leaning against the side of the building to be given to possible survivors inside.

They used bare hands and shovels, passing chunks of brick and concrete down a human chain away from the collapsed structure. On the ground, mixed in the debris were several pairs of pink cotton pants, a mud-covered navy blue sock and a pile of green uncut fabric.

Nearby, Abul Basar wept as he awaited news of his wife, who worked in one of the garment factories. "My son says that his mother will come back some day. She must return! " he cried.

Every once in a while a badly decomposed body would be brought out, covered in cloth and plastic, to a spot where ambulances were parked. Workers furiously sprayed air-fresheners on the bodies to cover the stench, leaving the air thick with the smell of death and cheap perfume.

The bodies were kept at a makeshift morgue at the nearby Adharchandra High School before being handed over to families. Many people milled around at the school, waving photos of their missing loved ones.

Junior local government minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak put the death toll at 348. Military spokesman Shahinul Islam said 2,429 survivors were accounted for, including 29 who were pulled out Saturday.

Junior Home Minister Shamsul Haque Tuku said police had arrested Bazlus Samad, managing director of New Wave Apparels Ltd., and Mahmudur Rahman Tapash, the company chairman. He told reporters that police had also detained the wife of Mohammed Sohel Rana, the owner of the collapsed Rana Plaza building, for questioning. The top three floors of the eight-story building were illegally constructed.

Authorities are still searching for Rana, a local politician, who hasn't been seen publicly since the building collapsed. Negligence cases have been filed against him. Police in Bangladesh often detain relatives of missing suspects as a way to pressure them to surrender.

Dhaka police superintendent Habibur Rahman said Rana was a local leader of ruling Awami League's youth front. His arrest, and that of the factory owners, was ordered by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the Awami League leader.

Police said they detained for questioning two engineers working for the Savar municipality, Imtemam Hossain and Alam Ali. They did not say what role they played in approving the design of the building but it was clear that the arrests amounted to a widening crackdown. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

A garment manufacturers' group said the factories in the building employed 3,122 workers, but it was not clear how many were inside it when it collapsed.

Police say they ordered an evacuation of the building on Tuesday after cracks in Rana Plaza were found, but the factories ignored the order and were operating when it collapsed the next day. Video before the collapse shows cracks in walls, with apparent attempts at repair. It also shows columns missing chunks of concrete and police talking to building operators.

Officials said soon after the collapse that numerous construction regulations had been violated.

The disaster is the worst ever for the country's booming and powerful garment industry, surpassing a fire five months ago that killed 112 people and brought widespread pledges to improve worker-safety standards. Since then, very little has changed in Bangladesh, where low wages have made it a magnet for numerous global brands.

Bangladesh's garment industry was the third largest in the world in 2011, after China and Italy, having grown rapidly in the past decade. The country's minimum wage is the equivalent of about $38 a month.

Among the garment makers in the building were Phantom Apparels, Phantom Tac, Ether Tex, New Wave Style and New Wave Bottoms. Altogether, they produced several million shirts, pants and other garments a year.

The New Wave companies, according to their website, make clothing for several major North American and European retailers.

Britain's Primark acknowledged it was using a factory in Rana Plaza, but many other retailers distanced themselves from the disaster, saying they were not involved with the factories at the time of the collapse or had not recently ordered garments from them.

Wal-Mart said none of its clothing had been authorized to be made in the facility, but it is investigating whether there was any unauthorized production.

Obama chides lawmakers over flight delay fix, budget conflict

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama chided Republicans on Saturday for approving a plan to ease air-traffic delays caused by federal spending cuts while leaving budget cuts that affect children and the elderly untouched.

The Senate and the House of Representatives backed a plan this week to give the Department of Transportation flexibility to cover immediate salaries of air traffic controllers at the Federal Aviation Administration who had been furloughed as part of budget cuts known as "sequester.

The furloughs, which started Sunday, led to take-off and landing delays at airports nationwide.

"This week, the sequester hurt travelers, who were stuck for hours in airports and on planes, and rightly frustrated by it. And, maybe because they fly home each weekend, the members of Congress who insisted these cuts take hold finally realized that they actually apply to them too," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address.

"So Congress passed a temporary fix. A Band-Aid. But these cuts are scheduled to keep falling across other parts of the government that provide vital services for the American people," he said.

Despite the chiding, White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Friday that Obama would sign the bill.

In his address, broadcast on Saturday morning, Obama noted that the cuts were affecting social programs and should be replaced with less arbitrary spending reductions.

"There is only one way to truly fix the sequester: by replacing it before it causes further damage," Obama said, adding he hoped members of Congress would feel the same sense of urgency they felt with the FAA cuts on other programs.

"They may not feel the pain felt by kids kicked off Head Start, or the 750,000 Americans projected to lose their jobs because of these cuts, or the long-term unemployed who will be further hurt by them. But that pain is real," he said.

Novelist Banks "stunned" by fan support over terminal cancer

LONDON (Reuters) - Scottish author Iain Banks, who announced this month he was suffering from terminal cancer, said he was "stunned" by the messages of support he has received from his fans.

The "Wasp Factory" author said he was deeply flattered and touched by all the responses left on the website Banksophilia, which was set up by his friend Martin Belk.

"Good grief! - what an outpouring of love, affection and respect. I honestly had no idea," he wrote.

"Discovering the sheer extent and depth of the feelings people have expressed on the message board over the past two weeks has been truly astounding," he added.

Banks, 59, said his problems came to light after a visit to his doctor about a sore back. Tests revealed he was not only suffering from jaundice but also cancer in his gall bladder.

He announced his illness on his website on April 3, before he canceled all future public engagements.

The author, who also writes science fiction under the name of Iain M Banks, said that as a late-stage gall bladder cancer patient he is only expected to live for a few months.

Banks has returned to Britain after a short honeymoon with his wife Adele in Paris and Venice to continue working on his new book "The Quarry."

Born in Fife, Banks studied at Stirling University before publishing "The Wasp Factory", his first novel, in 1984.

In 2008, he was named one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945 in a list compiled by the Times newspaper.

Banks said he would be looking "seriously" at the medical advice and suggestions made by his fans and would continue to post the occasional update for as long as he is able.

"I feel treasured, I feel loved ... and I can't deny I've been made to feel very special indeed," he added.

What many suspected was coming has indeed happened: Microsoft just confirmed an upcoming Xbox event on May 21st, which we expect to be focused on the company's next-gen Xbox console (informally codenamed Durango). The company isn't diving into specifics at this stage, but the event is taking place on its own Xbox campus and should offer a "real taste of the future," according to Xbox Live programming director Larry Hryb. Don't worry too much that Microsoft will completely upstage E3, which happens just a few weeks later -- Hryb also promises that his firm "continue the conversation" at the show, focusing its attention on its game lineup. Former Reuters editor pleads not guilty in Anonymous hacking case

SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - Former Reuters.com Deputy Social Media Editor Matthew Keys pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to federal charges that he aided members of the Anonymous hacking collective.

Keys, 26, on Monday said he was fired by Thomson Reuters , the parent company of Reuters News.

Keys was indicted in March by a federal grand jury in Sacramento on three criminal counts, alleging he entered an Internet chatroom used by members of the hacking collective Anonymous and helped hackers gain access to the computer system of Tribune Co. in December 2010. A story on the Tribune's Los Angeles Times website was altered by one of those hackers, the indictment said.

The alleged events occurred before he joined Reuters in 2012, the indictment indicated.

Keys was silent during the hearing in federal district court in Sacramento as his lawyer Jay Leiderman entered the plea. A status conference was set for June 12.

"He was a journalist in that chatroom, absolutely, but he didn't do the acts he was accused of doing," Leiderman told reporters outside the courtroom. It appeared as if someone else assumed Keys' chatroom identity, he said.

Since the indictment, Keys has continued to tweet about himself and about news events. Thomson Reuters has confirmed that he no longer works at the company.

The maximum for conviction on all three counts would be 25 years in prison, although actual sentences handed down by judges are often far less than the maximum.

In his job at Reuters, Keys posted news from Reuters and other sources on both company Twitter feeds and other means, including his own Twitter account.

He was suspended from Reuters after last month's indictment and his access to his Reuters email account was cut off. He continued to tweet from a personal account, @TheMatthewKeys, and identified himself as an editor at Reuters.

Keys in a blog post on Monday wrote that his coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing last week ? such as tweeting information from police scanners that ended up being incorrect ? was one of the reasons he was given for his termination. He has changed his profile description to "Former Deputy Social Media Editor at @Reuters".

A Thomson Reuters spokeswoman declined to comment.

'Capture the Fracture' provides guidance for global efforts to prevent secondary fractures

Fragility fractures due to osteoporosis are a major cause of disability or premature death in older adults. Those at highest risk are patients who have already suffered one fragility fracture; they are at twice the risk of suffering a future fracture compared to others who have not fractured.

Nevertheless health care systems around the world are failing to identify and treat these patients, leaving them exposed to debilitating and life-threatening secondary fractures.

Based on evidence from numerous global studies, a new report, 'Capture the Fracture: A Best Practice Framework and Global Campaign to Break the Fragility Fracture Cycle' (1), sets 13 achievable standards for best practice in implementing fracture liaison services (FLS) worldwide, in a broad range of health-economic environments.

Egypt court upholds ruling to suspend elections

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's state news agency says that a government legal agency representing President Mohammed Morsi has lost an appeal to reverse a court-ordered suspension of parliamentary elections.

MENA reported Sunday that the ruling by the Supreme Administrative Court to uphold the suspension was final. The polls had been set to begin this month.

Egyptian State Lawsuits Authority had filed the appeal after a lower court ruled in early March that the law governing the elections was illegal and that its passage by the Islamist-dominated temporary parliament was procedurally improper.

The president's Muslim Brotherhood party was pushing to hold elections for the law-making body now, saying it is essential for stability and a transition to democracy.

The opposition had expressed concerns, however, that the election law allowed for gerrymandering by the Brotherhood-dominated parliament.

Iraqis see some irregularities in provincial vote

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi election monitors on Sunday reported multiple irregularities in the country's first provincial vote since U.S. troops left, but were unclear as to whether results would be affected.

In an initial report, two non-governmental organizations, Shams and Tamoz, said over 300 irregularities had been recorded by the seven thousand monitors they had sent across Iraq to cover Saturday's polls.

The vote was a key test of Iraq's short experience with democratic elections because it was the first one run since the U.S. withdrawal in December 2011. Allegations of vote fixing are not uncommon following elections in the country.

In one instance, Hoger Jato of Shams said some security force members had helped specific campaigns while on duty, with some advising voters at polling centers on who to support. Elsewhere, electoral commission employees reportedly failed to check the identities of voters, allowing them to cast ballots on behalf others.

Announcing the report at a news conference in Baghdad, the NGOs did not say whether the irregularities were widespread enough to significantly affect the election's outcome.

The reports came as Iraqis began counting votes, unloading hundreds of ballot boxes from trucks and tallying the figures in the heavily guarded counting centers. Employees of the country's independent electoral commission went through the ballots under supervision of political party representatives.

Votes are first manually sorted before being entered into a computerized system. Final results are expected in several days.

Despite widespread violence in the run-up to the election that left at least 14 candidates dead, Saturday's voting was mostly peaceful. A few mortar shells and small bombs struck near polling centers, wounding at least six people.

The turnout stood at 51 percent, the same as at the last provincial elections in 2009. When some eligible voters complained they did not find their names on the voting rolls, the election commission blamed them for not updating their information.

Hours after closing the polls, the U.N. Special Representative, Martin Kobler, praised the vote as well-organized and peaceful.

"Credible elections are critical to the country's stability," Kobler said in a statement.

The voting took place in 12 of Iraq's 18 provinces. Voting was not scheduled in the ethnically-mixed province of Tamim, where ethnic groups have not reached a power-sharing deal. The last election for local officials there was in 2005. Elections were also delayed in two provinces because of unstable security conditions, and the country's autonomous three-province northern region was not included.

Thousands of candidates from 50 electoral blocs are vying for 378 seats on provincial councils. The Iraqi constitution does not give wide powers to provincial councils, but they have some say on security matters. They also negotiate local business deals and allocate funds.

Muscle repair after injury helped by fat-forming cells

Apr. 19, 2013 ? UC San Francisco scientists have discovered that muscle repair requires the action of two types of cells better known for causing inflammation and forming fat.

The finding in mice, published in the April 11 issue of Cell, showed that a well-known immune cell called the eosinophil [ee-oh-SIN-oh-fil] carries out the beneficial role in two ways -- by clearing out cellular debris from damaged tissue and teaming up with a type of cell that can make fat to instead trigger muscle regrowth.

The study, led by Ajay Chawla, MD, PhD, an associate professor of medicine at the UCSF Cardiovascular Research Institute, showed that after eosinophils move to the site of injury, they collaborate with a kind of progenitor cell -- immature cells similar to stem cells -- to drive the formation of new muscle fibers. The progenitors, called the fibro/adipogenic cells (FAP), do not spin off muscle cells directly.

"Without eosinophils you cannot regenerate muscle," Chawla said.

FAP cells have been known for their role in making fat, which occurs as the body ages or experiences prolonged immobility. They also have been known to make cells that form connective tissue. But the UCSF study showed that FAP cells also team up with eosinophils to make injured muscles get stronger rather than fatter, at least in mice.

In a kind of cellular chain reaction, Chawla's team found that when eosinophils at the site of muscle injury secrete a molecule called IL-4, FAP cells respond by expanding their numbers. And instead of becoming fat cells, they act on the true muscle stem cells to trigger the regrowth of muscle fibers.

"They wake up the cells in muscle that divide and form muscle fibers," he said.

Eosinophils help fight bacteria and parasites, as do other immune cells, but eosinophils are more often thought of for their maladaptive roles in allergies and other inflammatory reactions. Eosinophils comprise only a few percent of immune cells.

Chawla's team found that, even before active muscle repair, the chain reaction initiated by eosinophils performs another necessary task -- taking out the garbage.

"Eosinophils, acting via FAPs, are needed for the rapid clearance of necrotic debris, a process that is necessary for timely and complete regeneration of tissues," Chawla said.

Bigger and more abundant immune cells called macrophages -- with large appetites and a propensity to gobble up debris in other destructive scenarios -- had often, but erroneously, been credited with cleaning up messes within distressed muscle tissue.

"Bites from venomous animals, many toxicants, and parasitic worms all trigger somewhat similar immune responses that cause injury," Chawla said. "We want to know if eosinophils and FAPs are universally employed in these situations as a way to get rid of debris without triggering severe reactions such as anaphylactic shock."

Additional UCSF co-authors include postdoctoral fellow Jose E. Heredia, PhD; specialist Lata Mukundan, PhD; technician Francis Chen; Rahul Deo, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of medicine in residence; and Richard M. Locksley, MD, an immunologist and professor of medicine. Stanford researchers Thomas Rando, MD, PhD, and graduate student Alisa Mueller also were members of the study team.

The National Institutes for Health and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine funded the research.

Chemical shift MRI helps differentiate renal cell tumors more likely to metastasize

Adding "chemical shift" techniques to MRI can help differentiate clear cell renal cell carcinoma from other types of renal cell cancer, a new study shows. That differentiation can help physicians better determine treatment for these patients.

The study, conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, included 156 patients with proven renal cell cancer. Clear cell renal carcinoma contains microscopic areas of fat, which is not seen on conventional imaging, said Dr. Azadeh Elmi, lead author of the study. "Chemical shift MRI enables us to quantify even small amounts of fat," she said. The study found that chemical shift MRI was about 83% accurate in differentiating clear cell renal cell carcinoma from other types of kidney cancer.

Clear cell type is the most common type of kidney cancer, and it has the greatest potential to metastasize, said Dr. Elmi. Chemical shift MRI is a protocol that can be readily performed in kidney MRI at no additional cost, she said. "As we are moving toward less invasive treatment strategies for cancer patients, the need to better distinguish tumor characteristics is becoming greater. This study demonstrates that chemical shift MRI is a promising tool in renal cell cancer characterization before planning treatment. The surgeons can get better insight of the tumor biology and can plan before hand," Dr. Elmi said.

The study will be presented April 19 during the ARRS Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

Woman- and minority-owned businesses can benefit from well-defined relationships with select nonprofits.

Partnering with nonprofits makes good business sense for emerging and established woman- or minority-owned businesses. Board service puts a human face on your business; donating goods and services extends your brand. Creating a culture of philanthropy helps your business better compete for well-educated potential employees seeking a meaningful career and the opportunity to give back. Building a brand that communicates ?we? instead of ?me? opens the door to new networks and relationships that can help you meet your business objectives.

Other benefits include increased exposure to people of different cultures, races, ethnicities, geographic areas and professions; and learning from diverse leaders in a most intimate setting: that of a nonprofit grappling with management, marketing or budgetary issues.

People who are involved with nonprofits are civic-minded people who are willing to open doors for others, and to extend their network. They will have the opportunity work with you, get to know you, and refer your business. You can extend similar opportunities.

Be strategic about your involvement. Engage with nonprofits that impact or are supported by your customer/client base, and the community you operate in. Customers and clients are more loyal to businesses that engage with nonprofits they believe in. Find out which nonprofits resonate with your clients/customers; look for those with similar values; evaluate how they could help you meet your business objectives. Interview the leadership of potential partners to learn their expectations of your business, and the opportunities they could provide. Done right, nonprofit service, sponsorship and underwriting are cost-effective ways to build, sustain and expand a brand.

Things to consider. Identify a specific nonprofit to support with time, talent and finances over a multiyear period. Make the selection in collaboration with your leadership and employees. Increase your impact with planning and preparation. For example, identify what you want to achieve for your business, the nonprofit and the community. Determine how much money and time will you invest annually. Where will the money come from? Who will give their time? How do these numbers match to your nonprofit partner?s expectations?

Encourage employee giving. Implement a ?matching gift program? that matches employee giving dollar-for-dollar up to a set amount each year. Encourage ?on the clock? volunteering by employees. Incentivize customers and clients to support your nonprofit partner with time and money.

Include your nonprofit partnership strategy in your business plan to help ensure your business follows through on commitments. Over-deliver on your promises. Attend meetings and actively participate. Make an annual gift. Purchase a table at all events. Take advantage of sponsorship and underwriting opportunities. Ask other businesses to ?meet or beat? your contribution. You demonstrate leadership ? and increase your impact ? when you engage other businesses in the work of your nonprofit partner.

Dish of the Day: The reluctant vegetarian's recipe for Half fried ...

If you?re a vegetarian and love food then you need to know how to make this yourself? it?s a labour of love, but veggie or not no-one fails to drool at the sight of this. I?m drooling just thinking about the last double portion I scoffed!

Previously I have shied away from labour-intensive cooking; I?m too impatient and ordinarily want to be eating ASAP, so maybe save this one for the weekend or perhaps if you want to impress at a dinner party. Just so you know how committed I am to this dish, I spent an entire day making enough for 75 portions for my last Italian-themed pop-up restaurant, Get In My Pop-Up. Very committed! Don?t be scared: once you?ve mastered it, it takes no time at all.

I?ve included some small tips in here that make all the difference and if you happen to come across pasta ?00? flour then stock up, it can be a pain to get hold of unless you?re in Waitrose!

Recipe for Half fried, oversized spinach and ricotta ravioli with sage butter:

Serves 6/8

Cooking Time 1hr

Pasta Ingredients ?(You can just use the ?00? flour but I find this combination works well)

350g of ?00? Flour/Pasta Flour

150g of Strong White Flour (usually used for baking- you should be able to pick this up anywhere)

4 x Medium Sized Free Range Eggs

1/2 x tsp of salt

2-3 x tbsp of water ? depends on eggs size and consistency once all mixed

Fine semolina ? use to stop the pasta from sticking together or going sloppy once you?ve added the filling- flour doesn?t work in the same way.

2 x Egg whites ? use to stick your ravioli together

TIP: You can make the fresh pasta the day before or two if you have to, I find that if you?re going to do the fried version that there?s no harm in cooking them once you?ve made them then frying them up just before you?re ready to serve.

Instructions:

If you have a mixer then use the K beater to combine all of the above. The mixture should turn to crumbs when adding small amounts of water. Do this literally a teaspoon at a time until it turns to bigger crumbs before coming together into bigger doughy lumps. Don?t worry that it?s not in a smooth ball at this stage. Take it out of the mixer and roll/knead it together into a ball as best you can. I find using the ball of your hand works best plus you get to really work those arm muscles.

If you don?t have a mixer then heap the flour up and make a well in the middle, crack the eggs into it and use a knife to mix the flour and eggs. Using your hands, bring the mixture together and knead until in a rough ball.

The trick here is to then wrap it in cling film and leave it to rest for a minimum of 30 mins or up to three hours. It then miraculously comes together and you only need to gently knead it a few times before it?s ready to roll out.

If you have a pasta machine, roll it through each thickness setting twice. If you don?t then you need to aim to roll the pasta out so it?s as thick as a penny, it should be slightly transparent.

Ingredients for the Spinach and Ricotta filling:

250g Spinach ? thoroughly washed

300g Ricotta

1 x tsp of Nutmeg

1/2 Lemon Zest

Salt & Pepper ? Black & White

Filling Instructions:

Cook the spinach on a medium heat until it all wilts and then transfer to a muslin cloth or tea towel. Squeeze as much water out of the spinach as possible, then combine all of the above ingredients and mix thoroughly.

TIP: Make sure the filling is completely chilled before adding to the pasta.

For as little pasta wastage as possible make semi circles pasta shapes or squares if you really don?t want to waste any at all. For semi circles add a teaspoon of the filling before folding the pasta over the filling and cutting it into a semi-circle. Make sure you brush egg white on the pasta before folding so that the pasta sticks whilst leaving as little air in there as possible. For circles or squares just add the mixture to the pasta and brush a wash of egg white around the filling before placing the pasta on top, pushing out any air and cut with a knife into a circle or use the top of a large wine glass.

Cook in boiling water, with a dash of oil and salt. Cook for 4/5 mins.

Drain the water off then add to a hot pan with a mixture of oil and butter (just so the butter doesn?t burn.)

Add 4/5 sage leaves and fry on one side until crispy. Serve with the sage butter drizzled all over.

When I made a big batch I found it easier to make the sage butter separately; just butter rock salt and sage leaves ? this way the sage leaves didn?t burn.

If you fancy a sprinkle of parmesan then go for it ? you can buy vegetarian style ?parmesan? here, plus an extra sprinkle of lemon zest finishes this off perfectly. And be generous with the sage butter!
