Lakers World Peace out 6 weeks, needs knee surgery

(AP) ? Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace will have surgery on a torn meniscus in his left knee and miss the next six weeks.

The Lakers announced the timeline on Wednesday. World Peace is scheduled to have surgery Thursday and he won't be ready when the playoffs begin next month, if the Lakers reach the postseason.

They are in eighth place in the West, just a game ahead of Utah and Dallas for the final playoff spot.

World Peace was injured on Monday night against Golden State. He is averaging 12.8 points and 5.1 rebounds.

D'Antoni says Jodie Meeks will start Wednesday night against Minnesota in World Peace's place. That means Kobe Bryant will be the small forward.

Five year-olds who watch TV for three or more hours a day more likely to be antisocial: But the risk of this behaviour is very small

Mar. 25, 2013 ? Five year-olds who watch TV for three or more hours a day are increasingly likely to develop antisocial behaviours, such as fighting or stealing by the age of seven, indicates research published online in Archives of Disease in Childhood.

But the risk is very small, say the authors, who additionally found that time spent playing computer/electronic games had no impact on behaviour.

Prolonged screen viewing time has been linked to various behavioural and emotional problems in children, say the authors, but most research has focused exclusively on television, and almost all of it has been carried out in the US.

They wanted to explore what psychological and social impact time spent watching TV and playing electronic games might have on children between the ages of five and seven.

They included a representative sample of just over 11,000 children, all of whom were part of the Millennium Cohort Study, which has been tracking the long term health and development of UK children born between 2000 and 2002.

When they were five and then again when they were seven, the children's mothers were asked to describe how well adjusted their offspring were, using a validated Strengths and Difficulties (SDQ) questionnaire.

This contains five scales, measuring conduct problems, emotional symptoms, poor attention span/hyperactivity, difficulties making friends, and empathy and concern for others (pro-social behaviours).

The mums were also asked to report how much time their children spent watching TV and playing computer and electronic games at the age of five.

When they were five, almost two thirds of the children watched TV for between one and three hours every day, with 15% watching more than three hours. Less than 2% watched no TV.

But at this age, they spent considerably less time playing electronic games, and only 3% spent three or more hours engaged in this activity every day.

After taking account of influential factors, including parenting and family dynamics, watching TV for three or more hours a day was significantly associated with a very small increased risk of antisocial behaviour (conduct problems) between the ages of five and seven.

But spending a lot of time in front of the TV was not linked to other difficulties such as emotional problems or attention issues. And spending time playing electronic games had no similar impact, the analysis showed, although this might reflect the fact that children spent less time playing games than they did watching TV, say the authors.

They point out that the links between heavy screen time and mental health may be indirect, rather than direct, such as increased sedentary behaviour, sleeping difficulties, and impaired language development, and that the child's own temperament may predict screen time habits.

But they conclude that their study "suggests that a cautionary approach to the heavy use of screen entertainment in young children is justifiable in terms of potential effects on wellbeing, particularly conduct problems, in addition to effects on physical health and academic progress shown elsewhere."

BBQ'ing In Hongcheon ????? (Hongcheon, Korea) | hamatama

Hongcheon ???? is a county, surrounded by mountains and farmland, in the province of Gangwon ?????.

We took a two hour trip outside of Seoul to a friend?s weekend home. ?After an afternoon of shopping for food and drinks, we later set up two barbecue grills and got to work on grilling the Pork Neck Meat ??????, Pork Belly ?????, Flank Steak ????? and Polish Sausages ????? ???? accompanied by Kimchi ????, Kimchi Jjigae ??????, salads and a never ending stock of Soju ???? (a yam based spirit), Makgeoli ????? (fermented unfiltered rice wine similar to Japan?s ?Nigori Sake?), Chungha ???? (clear rice wine similar to Japan?s ?Sake?) and Beer ????. ?Pork Neck Meat???????, which is common in Korea but not so common in the U.S. is a very tender, moist and juicy cut of pork perfect all kinds of preparation methods. ?It is the ultimate cut of meat to make a great pork chop.

Of note, the Napa cabbage used to make the Kimchi ???? was grown on the small farmed area behind the house and made at home. ?Due to the freshness of the cabbage and the great cooking methods used, it was one of the most delicious Kimchi ???? I?ve had in recent memory. ?Also, in Korea, burned wood chips which is known as Sut ??? is used instead of charcoal which is typically used in grilling in the U.S. ?Sut ??? is in my opinion the best of both worlds because it provides the smokey wood flavor in traditional southern barbecuing while providing a hot enough flame to grill.

After six hours of eating and drinking, everyone was stuffed beyond belief and we all had a great time. ?I?ve been a city boy most of my life and it was a refreshing change of pace to be out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by mountains, farmland and crisp, clean air.

Syrian rebels ask US to shoot down Assad's warplanes with Patriot missiles

Mohamed Al-husain / Shaam News Network / Reuters

A look back at the conflict that has overtaken the country.

By Ayman Mohyeldin and F. Brinley Bruton, NBC News

A Syrian opposition leader said Tuesday that he had asked the United States to defend rebel-held areas with Patriot missiles.?

NATO already has Patriot surface-to-air missile batteries in NATO-member Turkey to help defend the country from potential airstrikes by?President Bashar Assad's regime.

Syrian opposition leader Mouaz al-Khatib -- who appeared Tuesday as the representative of Syria at an Arab League summit meeting following the Assad regime's suspension -- said that he had asked Secretary of State John Kerry "to extend the umbrella of the Patriot missiles to cover the Syrian north and he promised to study the subject," Reuters reported.

The insurgents have few weapons to counter Assad's helicopter gunships and warplanes. Al-Khatib added that the United States should play a bigger role in helping end the two-year-old conflict in Syria, blaming Assad's government for what he called its refusal to solve the crisis.?

Al-Khatib, who is considered a moderate preacher, appeared at the summit despite his?resignation as the head of the?Syrian National Coalition?on Sunday, when he slammed the lack of action by the international community.?An estimated 70,000 Syrians have been killed in the two-year conflict.

?We have been slaughtered under the watchful eyes of the world for two years, in an unprecedented manner by a vicious regime,? he said Sunday.

?Everything that happened to the Syrian people ? from destruction of infrastructure, arrest of tens of thousands of their children, displacement of tens of thousands, and other tragedies ? is not enough for the world to make an international decision to allow people to defend themselves," he added.

However, NATO said on Tuesday that it was not going to get involved in the conflict. "NATO has no intention to intervene militarily in Syria," a NATO official told Reuters.

The founder of the Free Syrian Army lost a leg in an explosion in Syria, according to Reuters. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Anti-Assad forces suffered a further blow Sunday night when the founder of the insurgent Free Syrian Army had his leg severed by an explosion in an apparent assassination attempt, opposition sources told Reuters. Colonel?Riad al-Asaad's?wounds were not life-threatening and he was moved from Syria to a hospital in Turkey, a Turkish official said.

The West and Arab nations? perceived inaction in the face of the slaughter and destruction infuriates many Syrian opposition members, who say they cannot topple Assad without military hardware like anti-tank mines and anti-aircraft missiles.

That hesitancy is especially galling for many in the opposition given that other countries are already involved in the war to an extent: Russia, Iran and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah support the regime more-or-less openly, while the United States, Europe and much of the Sunni Arab world are arrayed behind the rebels.

There are fears in the West that heavy weapons given to the rebels could fall into the hands of extremist groups fighting alongside them, such as Jabhat al-Nusra.

Despite of attempts to contain the crisis, the conflict is bleeding across its borders.

The civil war has already displaced an estimated 3 million Syrians, and sent more than a million fleeing into neighboring countries.

The conflict has also inflamed sectarian tensions in neighboring Lebanon, which suffered its own vicious civil war. Fears are growing that the violence will ignite simmering Sunni-Shiite tensions in Iraq.

On Monday, Jordan closed its main border crossing with Syria after two days of fighting there between Syrian troops and rebel fighters.

Rebels have also overrun several towns near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights,?fueling?tensions in the sensitive military zone.?

Reuters contributed to this report.

Beyond the Grave, Onto the Smartphone

A cemetery in Shenyang, the capital of China's Liaoning Province, will become, for lack of a better term, interactive. With mobile devices, people will be able to scan a quick response code on graves of people whose relatives have requested the feature. Scanning this code will allow visitors to learn about the person's life; they can also access a Web page where relatives and friends can upload photos or video.

Don't chase the money - Chase the passion. - ShoeMoney Internet ...

I get messages from people all the time who want to make money online. ?They read the blog/newsletter, ?see my phat AdSense Check and think I have the magic bullett.

Guess what I DO! ?Prepare yourself for it!

You have passion and expertise about something. ?Share that with people.

Let me give you some examples. ?I will start with myself.

  • In 2003, while working a full time job and also reselling computers online, ?I discovered a way to format ringtones and wallpapers for my Nextel phone. ?I loved doing it. ?It was a fun hobby. ?Long story short ? I ?took that knowledge and created a website that others could upload ringtones to. ?By 2005 the site was getting a ton of traffic. ?I got a call from Google that suggested I put AdSense code on the site. ?Overnight that site turned into a multimillion dollar website that I sold in 2010.
  • In 2007, ?after having success with contextual advertising and affiliate marketing I thought it would be fun to create AdSense looking ads that got high clickthroughs but instead of going through Google I would bypass them and use my affiliate link. ?Then I thought it would be fun to allow others to use this. ?Then one day at a conference a person from eBay said eBay affiliates were doing really well with my ShoeMoney Ads ad network and suggested I build it just around eBay. ?I created AuctionAds that did exactly that. ?I created this with a part time developer and within 4 months it was generating over 2 million a month and I sold the company literally 4 months to the day that it launched. ?Again this was a fun project that was almost like a hobby.
  • In 2003 I started a blog for fun sharing my life. ?Not a ?how to make money? blog but just shit I was doing. ?It evolved into what you are reading now. ?And its made millions of dollars.
  • In 2010 I shared my knowledge and experience on how I learned to make money online via a product called the ShoeMoney System. ?It?s sold over 2 million dollars worth to date and still continues to sell.
  • In 2011 for fun I created a website called freeseoreport.com. ?It was a free site where people could run a report on their site and a keyword they were trying to rank for then showed them what they were doing vs the top 10 people in every country and ever search engine. ?This was something I found of value myself in trying to figure out backlinks and onpage stuff that I was missing out on. ?I made money on the ?backend? by sending people value added emails educating them on a variety of subjects related to seo with affiliate links. ?There was also a viral component where for each person you?referred?to the website you got another free report. ?The site was getting about 600 new people a day running about 3,000 reports per day. ? The site was purchased 7 months later by an SEO firm.
  • Many years ago, ?really before I was well known, ?3 other marketers and myself started a high dollar conference called the elite retreat. ?Its 8k per person and limited to 30 people. ? We will be having our 10th event this fall.
  • In 2012 I created an automated email marketing system called the PAR Program. ?This is my total focus now. ?I stumbled into this because I took what I loved about email marketing and all the money we had made from it, ?did it for a large company and after seeing the results started offering it as a service. ?I have done ZERO marketing (I am bogged down with sales) and the company is growing like a rocket.

Ive done other stuff but those are the key ones. ?I have also had failures. ?Not because they were bad ideas but I just did not have the resources time wise to devote to making them work. ?All of them were fun projects but more importantly great experiences.

Lets look at others:

  • A friend of mine who is also passionate and educated about mixed martial arts started a site called ufcjunkie.wordpress.com (now mmajunkie.com due to trademark). ?He started the site as a hobby just putting his thoughts about the world of mixed martial arts online. ?He started the site on a wordpress free hosted platform. ?Within 5 years the site sold to USA TODAY for 8 figures.
  • 2 kids from hawaii, who were passionate about cats, thought it would be funny to post a picture of a cat captioning it with what they think the cat would say in ?cat language?. ?They uploaded a picture regularly and people found them funny. ?Again this was on a free wordpress hosted blog. ?The site was called icanhazcheeseburger.wordpress.com. ?The fun site got massive traction so they allowed others to upload their funny cat photos. ?Then one day they stumbled on to a blog called ShoeMoney.com, ?saw some guy holding a 134k AdSense check and put the code on their site. ?It made a ton and they sold the site for millions.
  • A long time ago a kid who grew up with his parents owning a wine selling business decided to start blogging about wine. ? People started stumbling on to the site who were also interested in wine. ?Then he started recording himself and the video?s started to become very viral. ?So much so that he got invites to appear on Conan Obrien and Ellen. ?He is now a multimillionaire with a #1 best selling book bringing in residual income. ?His site is?winelibrary.com and his name is?Gary Vaynerchuk.
  • A?Chinese?immigrant with very broken english started a blog because he was interested in making money online. ?Then he decided to show how much he was making online monthly. ?Started with very little. ?Then the blog started getting traction. ?He did this all while having a computer business. ?But he kept on sharing how he was making money online from his blog and exactly how much he was making. ?People loved it and he started getting a following. ?The site literally is called ?I make money by telling people I make money online?. ?Thats it! ? And now his site literally is nothing but promoting affiliate products or doing paid reviews of people?s ?how to make money? products. ?It worked out for him? ?He now makes a high six figure income basically doing nothing?. ?He has someone doing his posts for him as he travels around the world making more money month after month. ?He recently released a product keeping the same theme of being transparent and walking you through how to make money with a blog. ?He crushed it. ?- ?John Chow of johnchow.com
  • A former collegate pitcher decided to make a website offering a product to teach people how to gain more MPH on their fast ball offered a dvd set doing just that. ?He now has a thriving business at topvelocity.net
  • A guy started a blog making fun of celebrities for fun. ?Years later it evolved into perezhilton.com

See a trend here?

Lets get back to the original question? ? ?I want to make money online. ?Where do I start? ?

I don?t know ANY successful internet millionaire who did not stumble onto their internet success. ?None of them had visions of being a internet millionaire. ?They had passions, interest, and education about a subject and?pursued?it. ?That is the key. ? None of them had to quit their day jobs. ?They all started because it was a hobby. ?It was fun?

The one thing I have learned is when someone starts something that they consider ?work? they will give up quickly.

  • I have handed over websites to people that were generating hundreds of dollars a month for them to take and run with. ?Guess what? ?They didn?t do anything they just sucked up the revenue and let it die.
  • I have given PPC keywords to people that I was making a lot of money with promoting affiliate offers. ?Guess what? ?They ran it until they died then came to me for more keywords. ?The didn?t research or even care how it was making money.

?But honestly thats just the top of the ice berg. ?

For everyone who is making money on line there is millions of people who ?want to?. ?Out of those very few will take action. ?There is no doubt anyone can do it and the best part about it is you can do it from anywhere in the world no matter what level of education or experience.

This?opportunity?will not be around forever. ?Mostly because big brands are just now starting to see the value of some of the marketing techniques and dumping in tons of money where guys like us just can?t compete. ?Fortunately they move at a snails pace and for now guys sitting at home can do much more cutting edge techniques that big businesses can?t keep up.

I got a little off topic but my point is that if you really want to make money online it costs you no money at all to take action right now. ?And I mean RIGHT NOW.

Chase the passion not the money.

?

Pills, Patches and Implants: The BHM Guide to Birth Control

BHM Guide to Birth ControlThe array of contraception options can be dizzying. When you?re deciding on a birth control method, experts suggest you keep these seven considerations in mind: lifestyle fit, convenience, effectiveness, safety, affordability, reversibility and protection against sexually transmitted infections. We?ll add an eighth: You may need to make this decision a few times throughout your childbearing years; no one method will suit you for your entire life.

So sit back and let us guide you through the choices.

?

Abstinence. The only form of birth control that is 100 percent effective: Abstinence (also known as not having sex). Pregnancies (per 100 women): 0.

Cervical Cap. Similar to a diaphragm, but smaller, a cervical cap slips into place over the cervix, blocking sperm?s entry into the uterus. It is used in conjunction with spermicide. Cervical caps can stay in place for 48 hours, giving them a thumb?s up on the spontaneity front. Cervical caps must be fitted by a physician, and they provide no STI protection. They also can?t be used during your period. Pregnancies (per 100 women): 11 to 16 (women who have never had children); 22 to 32 (women who have had children).

Condom (female). A thin rubber sheath with one closed end, the female condom was first introduced in 1994. Version two (quieter than the first version, which users complained squeaked) was released in 2009. In addition to being a contraceptive, the female condom also provides protection from sexually transmitted infections (STI). Like the male condom, the female condom is designed for one-time use. Unlike the male condom, an erect penis is not required to use the female condom. Pregnancies (per 100 women): 20.

Condom (male). Condoms, latex, lambskin or polyurethane shields, have been around for a least 400 years. To use one, roll it over an erect penis. Sounds simple, but a 2012 report from the Kinsey Institute found an unexpected number of adults use condoms incorrectly. Designed for one-time use, latex and polyurethane condoms also protect against STIs. Latex condoms are weakened by oil-based lubricants. Pregnancies (per 100 women): 11 to 16.

Diaphragm. A rubber dome that is placed over the cervix before sex, a diaphragm is used with a spermicide. A diaphragm is relatively inexpensive and lasts about two years. But it must be fitted by a doctor, doesn?t provide STI protection and can?t be used during your period due to a risk of toxic shock syndrome. If you gain significant weight during the two-year lifetime of your diaphragm, you may need to be refitted. Pregnancies (per 100 women): 11 to 17.

Emergency Contraception. Plan B, Plan B One-Step and Next Choice (a generic form of Plan B) is an option if you didn?t use birth control, your usual method failed or you were sexually assaulted. Also called the morning-after pill, all three options contain a high dose of a hormone found in many birth control pills and must be used within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. They are available to women 17 and older without a prescription. Ella, a non-hormonal emergency contraception drug, requires a doctor?s prescription regardless of a woman?s age and can be taken up to five days after sex. Emergency contraception doesn?t work if you are already pregnant; there is no evidence emergency contraception will harm a fetus if you are already pregnant. Pregnancies (per 100 women): 1.

Implanon. Introduced in 2006, Implanon is a matchstick-sized rod implanted? beneath the skin of a woman?s upper arm. Implanon lasts three years and can be used by breastfeeding women. It is expensive ($400 to $800 for exam, implant and insertion), and it is not as effective for overweight or obese women. It may cause irregular bleeding and heavier periods. There is no STI protection. Pregnancies (per 100 women): less than 1.

IUD. An intrauterine device (IUD) is a T-shaped plastic device inserted into the uterus. Both types (ParaGard, a copper IUD, can last as long as 12 years; Mirena, a hormonal IUD, must be replaced after five years) make it difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg. Once an IUD is in place, you can ignore it. It may cause irregular or heavier periods. Pregnancies (per 100 women): less than 1 for both types.

NuvaRing. A flexible, plastic ring inserted into the vagina, NuvaRing releases low-dose progestin and estrogen over a three-week period. It is easy to insert and remove and has low estrogen-related side effects, such as nausea and breast tenderness. Breastfeeding women will have to use another form of birth control; NuvaRing can?t be used while breastfeeding. Pregnancies (per 100 women): less than 1.

The Patch. Introduced to the market in 2002, the patch is a small progestin-only square worn stuck to the body like a Band-Aid for three-week periods. It is convenient and easily reversible. Possible side effects include bleeding between periods, a risk of blood clots and changes in desire. Pregnancies (per 100 women): 5.

The Pill. The most common form of birth control pill uses a combination of estrogen and progestin taken for 21 days to prevent ovulation. The pill does more than prevent pregnancy; it also provides some protection against acne, and endometrial and ovarian cancers. Breastfeeding moms can take the progestin-only mini pill, but to be effective, the mini pill must be taken at the same time every day. The pill does not, however, prevent STIs, and it could increase your risk for spotting, breast tenderness, higher blood pressure and blood clots. Pregnancies (per 100 women): 5 to 8.

Rhythm Method. Also called fertility awareness and natural family planning, the rhythm method involves tracking body temperature and cervical mucus and avoiding sex when you are most fertile. It is non-hormonal and noninvasive, but relying on this method requires keeping close track of ?safe? days. The rhythm method may not work for women with irregular periods or women who are breastfeeding. Pregnancies (per 100 women): None if done correctly (but note that 25 percent of typical users get pregnant).

Shot. Depo Provera is a shot of the hormone progestin that prevents ovulation for three months. Though Depo also provides some protection against cancer in the lining of the uterus, long-term use has been linked to a loss of bone density. Requiring four injections each year, Depo can be pricey (about $240/year). It doesn?t protect against STIs, and some women report breakthrough bleeding, especially during the initial months of use. Pregnancies (per 100 women): less than 1.

Spermicide. A chemical that kills sperm, spermicide can be foam, jelly, cream or film that is placed inside the vagina before sex. Some types must be inserted 30 minutes before sex. Frequent use may cause irritation, increasing the risk of infections and STIs. Pregnancies (per 100 women): 30.

Sponge. Introduced in the early ?80s, the sponge is a soft, spermicide-covered polyurethane disc inserted into the vagina against the cervix up to 24 hours before intercourse. You don?t need a prescription for the sponge, which has been on and off the market because of company woes, not medical concerns. But it can be difficult to insert and remove. The sponge also doesn?t provide protection against STIs, and, like the diaphragm and cervical cap, it can?t be used during your period. Pregnancies (per 100 women): 11 to 16 (women who have never had children); 22 to 32 (women who have had children).

Tubal Ligation. If your baby-making days are over (or you know you don?t want to have children), you can have your tubes tied. This permanent form of birth control is a surgical procedure where a physician closes off the fallopian tubes. A newer procedure inserts silicone (Adiana) or metal (Essure) implants into the fallopian tubes non-surgically. Scar tissue grows around the implants, blocking the tubes, and it is effective in about three months. Neither form of tubal ligation provides protection against STIs, and young women may have difficulty convincing doctors to perform the procedure. Pregnancies (per 100 women): less than 1.

Vasectomy. At the moment, a vasectomy?surgically closing the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles)?is the only form of birth control?available to men besides condoms. After the permanent procedure, which is cheaper than tubal ligation, sperm won?t be released, but a man will still ejaculate. There is no protection against STIs with a vasectomy. Pregnancies (per 100 women): less than 1.

Withdrawal. Surprisingly, about six in 10 women in this country say they use the withdrawal method (known as ?pulling out?), where a man removes his penis from a woman?s vagina before ejaculating. On the plus side: Withdrawal is free and hormone free. But to prevent pregnancy it must be done correctly every time, and there is no protection against STIs. Pregnancies (per 100 women): 4 when done correctly; typically 18.

UN Myanmar envoy visits ruined city after violence

MEIKHTILA, Myanmar (AP) ? The top UN envoy to Myanmar on Sunday toured a central city destroyed in the country's worst explosion of Buddhist-Muslim violence this year, calling on the government to punish those responsible for a tragedy that left dozens of corpses piled in the streets, some of them charred beyond recognition.

Vijay Nambiar, the U.N. secretary-general's special adviser on Myanmar, also visited some of the nearly 10,000 people driven from their homes after sectarian unrest shook the city of Meikhtila for several days this week. Most of the displaced are minority Muslims, who appeared to have suffered the brunt of the violence as armed Buddhist mobs roamed city.

Nambiar said he was encouraged to learn that some individuals in both communities had bravely helped each other and that religious leaders were now advocating peace. He said the people he spoke to believe the violence "was the work of outsiders," but he gave no details.

"There is a certain degree of fear and anxiety among the people, but there is no hatred," Nambiar said after visiting both groups on Sunday and promising the United Nations would provide as much help as it can to get the city back on its feet. "They feel a sense of community and that it is a very good thing because they have worked together and lived together."

But he added: "It is important to catch the perpetrators. It is important that they be caught and punished."

Nambiar's visit came one day after the army took control of the city to enforce a tense calm after President Thein Sein ordered a state of emergency here.

Late Saturday, the government put the death toll in the violence at 32, according to state television, which reported that bodies had been found as authorities began cleaning up the area.

The bloodshed marked the first sectarian unrest to spread into Myanmar's heartland since two similar episodes rocked western Rakhine state last year. It is the latest challenge to efforts to reform the Southeast Asian country after the long-ruling military ceded power two years ago to a civilian government led by retired army officers.

There are concerns the violence could spread, and the bloodshed has raised questions about the government's failure to rein in anti-Muslim sentiment in a predominantly Buddhist country where even monks have armed themselves and taken advantage of newfound freedoms to stage anti-Muslim rallies.

In Meikthila, at least five mosques were set ablaze from Wednesday to Friday. The majority of homes and shops burned in the city also belonged to Muslims, and most of the displaced are Muslim.

During his trip, Nambiar visited some of the thousands of Muslim residents at a city stadium, where they have huddled since fleeing their homes. He later visited around 100 Buddhists at a local monastery who have also been displaced.

No new violence was reported overnight, but residents remained anxious.

"The city is calm and some shops have reopened, but many still live in fear. Some still dare not return to their homes," said Win Htein, an opposition lawmaker from the city.

Myanma Ahlin, a state-run newspaper, carried a statement from Buddhist, Muslim, Christian and Hindu leaders expressing sorrow for the loss of life and property and calling on Buddhist monks to help ease tensions.

"We would like to call upon the government to provide sufficient security and to protect the displaced people and to investigate and take legal measures as urgently as possible," the statement said.

Muslims, who make up about 30 percent of Meikhtila's 100,000 inhabitants, have stayed off the streets since their shops and homes were burned and Buddhist mobs armed with machetes and swords began roaming the city.

Little appeared to be left of some palm tree-lined neighborhoods, where the legs of victims could be seen poking out from smoldering masses of twisted debris and ash. Broken glass, charred cars and motorcycles and overturned tables littered roads beside rows of burned-out homes and shops, evidence of the widespread chaos that swept the town.

The struggle to contain the violence has proven another major challenge to Thein Sein's reformist administration, which has faced an upsurge in fighting with ethnic Kachin rebels in the north and major protests at a northern copper mine where angry residents ? emboldened by promises of freedom of expression ? have come out to denounce land grabbing.

The devastation was reminiscent of last year's clashes between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya that left hundreds of people dead and more than 100,000 displaced ? almost all of them Muslim. The Rohingya are widely perceived as illegal migrants and foreigners from Bangladesh; the Muslim population of Meikhtila is believed to be mostly of Indian origin.

Chaos began Wednesday after an argument broke out between a Muslim gold shop owner and his Buddhist customers. Once news spread that a Muslim man had killed a Buddhist monk, Buddhist mobs rampaged through a Muslim neighborhood and the situation quickly spiraled out of control.

Residents and activists said the police did little to stop the rioters or reacted too slowly, allowing the violence to escalate.

Occasional isolated violence involving Myanmar's majority Buddhist and minority Muslim communities has occurred for decades, even under the authoritarian military governments that ruled the country from 1962 to 2011.

Central African Republic rebels in capital, France sends troops

By Paul-Marin Ngoupana

BANGUI (Reuters) - Central African Republic rebels clashed with government forces inside the capital on Saturday as they sought to topple President Francois Bozize, prompting France to send in more troops to secure the international airport.

The Seleka rebel coalition resumed hostilities this week in the mineral-rich former French colony, vowing to oust Bozize whom it accuses of breaking a January peace agreement to integrate its fighters into the army.

A Reuters reporter in the northern suburbs of the riverside capital said the rebels had taken control of the neighborhood around Bozize's private residence, known as PK12. Rebels in civilian clothes had infiltrated other areas, residents said.

Government troops retained control of the city centre, home to the presidential palace.

As darkness fell, no further fighting was reported in the capital, which was left without electricity and water after the Seleka forces - who had seized the nearby town of Boali with its electricity station - turned off the power.

Many residents huddled in darkened homes with no access to radio or television. "We are in complete darkness without any information," said Saint Hardy, an accountant.

Nelson Ndjadder, a spokesman for the rebels, said that his fighters had shot down a military helicopter which had been harrying their columns since Friday and would push onwards to the presidential palace.

Government spokesman Crepin Mboli-Goumba said the government was still in control of the capital. "President Bozize is still in power," he told Reuters. "Bangui has still not fallen."

France's Le Monde newspaper, citing a diplomatic source, said Bozize's family had boarded a plane sent by Equatorial Guinea while he remained in Bangui. It was not possible to confirm that immediately.

U.N. officials, who asked not to be identified, said that mobs of the pro-Bozize civilians had blocked the exit from their compound when they tried to evacuate non-essential staff.

CAR remains among the least developed countries in the world despite rich deposits of gold, diamonds and uranium.

NO THREAT TO FRENCH CITIZENS

Seleka, a loose umbrella group of insurgents, fought its way to the gates of the capital late last year after accusing Bozize of failing to honor an earlier peace deal to give its fighters cash and jobs in exchange for laying down their arms.

The violence is the latest in a series of rebel incursions, clashes and coups that have plagued the landlocked nation in the heart of Africa since its independence from France in 1960.

France, which already has some 250 soldiers stationed in the Central African Republic, sent in another company of 150 troops to secure Bangui's international airport, a diplomatic source said.

"We have asked our citizens to remain at home. For the time being, there is nothing to be worried about," said the source. "There is no direct threat to our citizens at the moment."

The airport, close to the heart of the capital, would be an important exit point for France's 1,200 citizens who live in CAR, mostly in Bangui.

South Africa has sent some 400 soldiers to train Bozize's army, joining hundreds of peacekeepers from the Central African regional bloc. Regional peacekeeping sources said the South Africans had fought alongside the Central African Republic's army.

State radio had announced late on Friday that South Africa would boost its troop presence after Bozize met his South African counterpart Jacob Zuma in Pretoria.

Captain Zamo Sithole, senior operations communications officer at South Africa's National Defence Force said: "We are there in the CAR to protect our properties there, and our troops there."

A South African Defence Ministry spokesman declined to comment.

Dispute over worker wages snags immigration talks

(AP) ? A dispute between business and labor groups over wages for low-skilled workers flared up Friday as senators grasped for a deal on a sweeping immigration bill.

Officials from outside groups said the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and AFL-CIO, negotiating through a bipartisan group of senators, had reached significant agreement on a new visa program to bring up to 200,000 lower-skilled workers a year to the country.

The number of visas would fluctuate according to demand, and the workers would be able to change jobs and could seek permanent residency.

But the AFL-CIO was pushing for higher wages for the workers than the chamber had agreed to so far. The AFL-CIO argued that the chamber was trying to pay below median wage for any given profession, but the chamber said it would pay about the same as American workers get.

In the case of housekeepers, for example, the chamber wanted $8.44 per hour, which falls below the federal poverty level for a family of four, while the AFL-CIO position was $11.39 per hour, according to one official. The officials described the status of the discussions on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose details of the private talks.

The disagreement came as the so-called Gang of Eight faced pressure to reach a deal Friday in order to meet a self-imposed deadline of releasing its legislation in April. Friday was the last day Congress was in session before a two-week recess.

The bill would secure the border, improve legal immigration and workplace enforcement, and put the nation's approximately 11 million illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship.

As the day wore on, senators met hour after hour in a private chamber just off the Senate floor, and the chamber and AFL-CIO traded jabs, each accusing the other side of imperiling negotiations.

"We think Republicans are going to have a hard time to go home during recess and explain to their constituents, especially in Florida and Arizona, why they are holding up one of the most important pieces of legislation to this community based on their greed of not paying poor people even median wages," said Ana Avendano, assistant to the AFL-CIO president for immigration and community action.

Randy Johnson, the chamber's senior vice president for labor, immigration and employee benefits, said the chamber simply wanted to stick with current law requiring that temporary workers be paid whichever is greater: what comparable American workers make or the prevailing wage as determined by the Labor Department.

"We're puzzled as to why the unions would risk jeopardizing the negotiations by pushing for a provision that would drive up wages for immigrant workers above American workers," Johnson said in a statement.

Despite the last-minute jockeying senators reported they were moving forward.

"People have a lot at stake here, this is a huge deal. We're talking about the lives of 11 million people just to start with, so I understand why passions are high and sentiments are high," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a leader of the group, told reporters Friday.

"We just make steady progress. We take two steps forward, and then we take a step back," McCain said.

Queens College Education Professor Partricia Velasco ? CUNY ...

March 22, 2013 | Queens College

Flushing, N.Y., March 22, 2013 ? The New York State Department of Education has awarded Queens College?s Elementary and Early Childhood Education Department $497,000 in federal Race to the Top funding to develop the Bilingual Common Core Progressions, a roadmap for language learning and literacy aligned to the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards. This is part of an effort to better meet the needs of the state?s growing population of students who are learning English as they work to achieve the goals expected of all students under the Common Core.

Patricia Velasco will direct the project with the support of Helen Johnson and Ruth Swinney. Velasco and Johnson are EECE faculty members. Swinney was principal of PS 165 in Manhattan and created curricula for dual language bilingual programs

Velasco says that the State Education Department selected her to lead this effort because of work she had previously done in bilingual education.

The project will help advance the New York State Bilingual Common Core Initiative. ?It?s taking all the Common Core standards for English language arts and developing different scaffolds for emerging bilinguals,? says Velasco. ?This will help children who are learning two languages meet the level of sophistication the Common Core is demanding. The Progressions will allow students to use not only English, but also their home language, to achieve the Common Core.?

Implementation of these new Progressions, explains Velasco, will mark a departure from the traditional English as a Second Language (ESL) and bilingual approach for grade school students who are learning English. The Progressions, which call for rigorous grade-level work for all students, will integrate language and content learning in intentional and strategic ways, and will allow for more flexible uses of language to allow students to meet the Common Core standards.

Velasco hopes to have the new Bilingual Common Core Progressions completed by late summer.

Apple blames record labels, film studios for high Australian prices

By Jane Wardell

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Apple Inc blamed "old-fashioned" record companies, film studios and TV networks for the inflated prices Australians pay compared with U.S. consumers for digital downloads, as it defended its pricing strategy on Friday.

Executives from Apple, Adobe Systems Inc and Microsoft Inc were grilled by a special Australian parliamentary committee tasked with investigating allegations of price gouging raised by consumer watchdogs.

Software and hardware products in Australia sell for an average of 50 percent more than their U.S. equivalents, according to a 2012 survey of 186 songs, games, programs and computers by Choice, a not-for-profit consumer advocacy group.

As soaring cost-of-living bills for basic services hurt the popularity of the minority Labor government ahead of a September 14 election it is widely tipped to lose, lawmakers are considering restricting the ability of companies to set prices in Australia.

Apple, Adobe and Microsoft executives told lawmakers the higher prices reflected factors including Australia's 10 percent goods and services tax, higher labor costs, copyright issues and geographical product differentiation.

Tony King, the vice president for Apple Australia, New Zealand and South Asia, said pricing on some products like the iPad mini and Final Cut Pro software was about the same as in the United States.

But at A$19.99 ($20.87), the Australian price of Justin Timberlake's album "20/20 Experience" on Apple's iTunes music store is about double the $10.99 charged in the United States. AC/DC's "Back in Black" is marked up 70 percent for Australian fans.

King said the pricing of digital content was based on wholesale prices set via negotiated contracts with record labels, movie studios and TV networks.

"The content industry still runs with perhaps old-fashioned notions of country borders or territories or markets," King said, adding that Apple had pushed content owners for lower Australian pricing.

Asked why Apple, the dominant provider of digital entertainment downloads, could not use its clout to knock down wholesale prices, King said responsibility ultimately lay with content providers.

"The cards are in the hand of the folks who own the content, that is not in our hand to play," he said.

"EVASIVE" ANSWERS

The three companies were accused of stonewalling the pricing inquiry after they initially declined to send executives to answer questions publicly. Adobe and Microsoft had provided written submissions while Apple did not respond at all.

The committee labeled some of the executives' answers as "evasive" and greeted others with skepticism.

A particular bone of contention was the need for so-called geo-blocking, under which companies prevent Australia-based web users from purchasing products at cheaper rates on U.S. sites.

Australians have to fork out A$3,175 ($3,300) for Adobe's CS6 Design and Web Premium suite, which Americans can buy for just $1,899.

Adobe Australia Managing Director Paul Robson said Adobe's Creative Cloud suite, which is bought on a A$50-a-month subscription basis, was priced on par with the United States and this was "the future of the way we will deliver our technology."

Committee member Stephen Jones said the subscription software placed "digital handcuffs" on users, forcing them to keep paying to continue accessing their files.

Committee deputy chairman Paul Neville cited the example of a suite of Microsoft products that cost the equivalent of A$2,324 in the United States, A$3,105 in Canada, A$2,323 in Singapore and A$4,136 in Australia.

"It seems what you put to us, you're charging what you can get away with in any market," Neville said to Microsoft Australia Managing Director Pip Marlow, who denied the charge.

"If we price the products too high, consumers will vote with their wallets and move elsewhere, we have a very competitive landscape," Marlow told the committee in Canberra.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] A key advance, newly reported by chemists from Brown and Yale Universities, could lead to a cheaper and more sustainable way to make acrylate, an important commodity chemical used to make materials from polyester fabrics to diapers.

Chemical companies churn out billions of tons of acrylate each year, usually by heating propylene, a compound derived from crude oil. "What we're interested in is enhancing both the economics and the sustainability of how acrylate is made," said Wesley Bernskoetter, assistant professor of chemistry at Brown, who led the research. "Right now, everything that goes into making it is from relatively expensive, nonrenewable carbon sources."

Since the 1980s researchers have been looking into the possibility of making acrylate by combining carbon dioxide with a gas called ethylene in the presence of nickel and other metal catalysts. CO2 is essentially free and something the planet currently has in overabundance. Ethylene is cheaper than propylene and can be made from plant biomass.

There has been a persistent obstacle to the approach, however. Instead of forming the acrylate molecule, CO2 and ethylene tend to form a precursor molecule with a five-membered ring made of oxygen, nickel, and three carbon atoms. In order to finish the conversion to acrylate, that ring needs to be cracked open to allow the formation of a carbon-carbon double bond, a process called elimination.

That step had proved elusive. But the research by Bernskoetter and his colleagues, published in the journal Organometallics, shows that a class of chemicals called Lewis acids can easily break open that five-membered ring, allowing the molecule to eliminate and form acrylate.

Lewis acids are basically electron acceptors. In this case, the acid steals away electrons that make up the bond between nickel and oxygen in the ring. That weakens the bond and opens the ring.

"We thought that if we could find a way to cut the ring chemically, then we would be able to eliminate very quickly and form acrylate," Bernskoetter said. "And that turns out to be true."

He calls the finding an "enabling technology" that could eventually be incorporated in a full catalytic process for making acrylate on a mass scale. "We can now basically do all the steps required," he said.

From here, the team needs to tweak the strength of the Lewis acid used. To prove the concept, they used the strongest acid that was easily available, one derived from boron. But that acid is too strong to use in a repeatable catalytic process because it bonds too strongly to the acrylate product to allow additional reactions with the nickel catalyst.

"In developing and testing the idea, we hit it with the biggest hammer we could," Bernskoetter said. "So what we have to do now is dial back and find one that makes it more practical."

There's quite a spectrum of Lewis acid strengths, so Bernskoetter is confident that there's one that will work. "We think it's possible," he said. "Organic chemists do this kind of reaction with Lewis acids all the time."

The ongoing research is part of a collaboration between Brown and Yale supported by the National Science Foundation's Centers for Chemical Innovation program. The work is aimed at activating CO2 for use in making all kinds of commodity chemicals, and acrylate is a good place to start.

"It's around a $2 billion-a-year industry," Bernskoetter said. "If we can find a way to make acrylate more cheaply, we think the industry will be interested."

Syrian rebels take towns near ceasefire line with Israel

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels have overrun several towns near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in the past 24 hours, rebels and a monitoring group said on Thursday, fuelling tensions in the sensitive military zone.

"We have been attacking government positions as the army has been shelling civilians, and plan to take more towns," said Abu Essam Taseel, from the media office of the "Martyrs of Yarmouk", a rebel brigade operating in the area.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group monitoring the conflict in Syria, said rebels had taken several towns near the Golan plateau, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed.

It said that on Wednesday night rebels had captured Khan Arnabeh, which sits on the Israeli-Syrian disengagement line and straddles a main road leading into Israeli-held territory.

Rebels also took Mashati al-Khadar and Seritan Lahawan, two villages near the ceasefire line, it said.

U.N. peacekeepers monitoring the line halted patrols this month after rebels held 21 Filipino observers for three days.

The armed struggle between rebels and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has posed increasing difficulties for the 1,000-strong U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

There is growing concern in Israel that Islamist rebels may be emboldened to end the quiet maintained by Assad and his father before him on the Golan front since 1974.

Rebel sources say the Syrian army intensified shelling of villages in the area of Saham al-Golan at dawn on Thursday.

They said that rebels in the Quneitra region, next to the Golan, were stepping up attacks on roadblocks to gain more territory but added that the strategic town of Quneitra - which was largely destroyed and abandoned during Israeli-Syrian clashes in 1974 - was still in Syrian government hands.

Bernanke: Cyprus poses 'no major risk' to U.S. banks, economy

You don?t need to worry about the financial crisis in Cyprus sparking trouble for the U.S., according to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

European officials? marathon efforts this week to head off a collapse of the tiny island nation?s banking system have raised fears that the renewed turmoil in the euro zone could threaten the gathering momentum in the U.S. housing and job markets.

But Bernanke said that?s not likely.

?We are monitoring very carefully but at this point we?re not seeing major risk to the U.S. financial system or the U.S. economy,? he told reporters Wednesday.

Cypriot bank depositors woke Saturday to news that Europe?s latest, $13 billion bailout to keep their government afloat came with a nasty price tag: a ?tax? of as much as 10 percent of their savings. Cypress lawmakers rejected the proposal, but banks there remain closed until at least next Tuesday to head off what some fear is an inevitable run on deposits.

That would drive the country?s banking system even further into what Bernanke described as ?a deep financial hole.?

Bernanke said the current stems largely from the size of the Cypriot banking system relative to its economy.

At the end of January, bank assets in Cyprus totaled more than $160 billion ? more than six times the country?s a gross domestic product of less than $25 billion ? roughly the size of Vermont?s economy. (By comparison, U.S. bank assets of roughly $13 trillion are less than total U.S. economic output of more than $15 trillion.)

So while the situation remains painful for Cyprus, and complicates Europe?s efforts to resolve its long-running crisis, it poses little threat to U.S. banks, said Bernanke.

?The only way that they would create a problem would be if the runs became contagious in some sense and if depositors in other countries lost confidence,? he said. ?But to this point, I'm not aware of any evidence that that is, in fact, the case.?

Some investors have also wondered aloud whether the financial turmoil in Europe could throw cold water on a red-hot Wall Street rally that has sent stock prices soaring to new records.

Since last summer, the drumbeat of dire headlines about the imminent collapse of the euro has subsided. But the euro zone economy has slid into recession, and the political divide between relatively well-off countries in the north and their struggling southern neighbors has widened.

The recent upheaval in Cyprus is a reminder that investors may have been lulled into thinking the crisis is over, according to Scott Minerd, chief investment officer at Guggenheim Partners.

The Fed?s complacency, he said, is ?probably is a warning sign that we should start lightening up our portfolios.?

Bernanke told reporters that investors seem to agree with him that Cyprus doesn?t pose a problem.

"The markets are up today,? he said. ?I don't think the impact has been enormous.?

Cyprus bailout backlash poses little wider risk - for now

Bernanke?s press conference followed a two-day meeting of Fed policy makers in which the central bankers pledged to continue their aggressive, $85-billion-a-month shopping spree for U.S. government and mortgage debt. The strategy, which is designed to keep interest rates at record low levels to spur purchases and investment, seems to be working.

Ultra-low mortgage rates have sparked a gathering revival in the long-moribund housing market. Though hiring remains weak compared to past recoveries, it has picked up markedly in the past six months. Fed officials have pledged to continue their easy-money policy until the unemployment rate ? now 7.7 percent ? falls to 6.5 percent.

That?s not expected until at least 2015, according to the Fed?s latest economic outlook, which was roughly in line with the previous forecast issued in December.

The Fed?s unprecedented policy ? never tried before in its 100-year history ? has swollen its holdings to some $3 trillion of debt, a level that some critics argue will present huge headaches when the central bank ultimately reverses course and begins selling those assets.

Others worry that the massive cash infusion to the economy, which followed the worst financial collapse since the Great Depression, could be sowing the seeds of another round of inflation.

Bernanke gave some hint in Wednesday?s press conference to the Fed?s current thinking about its ?exit strategy,? the point at which it begins selling bonds and letting rates rise again.

The chairman said his central bank colleagues expect there will be a ?considerable interval? between the time it needs to pull its foot of the gas (ending its easy-money bond buying) and begin to tap the brakes (nudging interest rates higher.)

And it could take awhile to strike the right balance. Just because they stop buying bonds one month or start selling them in another doesn?t mean they won?t change course depending on the impact on the economic outlook and the latest reading on inflation.

"When we see that the situation has changed in a meaningful way,? Bernanke said, ?we may well adjust the pace of purchases in order to keep the level of accommodation consistent with the outlook.?
