Vegan Recipe: Lucky Greens and Blackeyes - Eat Drink Better
Long associated with luck and prosperity, no New Year?s celebration is complete without the mighty blackeyed pea!?Sadly, though, this Southern custom?rarely brings?good fortune to the?porcine folk whose hocks often wind up in traditional cuisine. This recipe offers savory holiday deliciousness, but?without chopping off anyone?s ankles ? and your?slow cooker?does most of the work, while you celebrate with family and friends.?What?great way to kick off?the New Year!
Ingredients
- 2 cups dried blackeyed peas (about 2-1/2 to 3 cups after soaking)
- 1 medium or large yellow onion, chopped
- 4 large or 5 medium garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves (not ground thyme)
- 2 bay leaves
- 1/4 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning, or to taste
- 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup vegan butter or refined coconut oil, melted
- 3 cups seasoned vegetable broth (such as Better Than Boullion No-Chicken Base)
- 1 bunch mustard greens (or turnip greens or kale),?washed well,?ribs removed,?and chopped or torn into bite-sized pieces
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring, to taste
- 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
- 1-1/2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
- 1 to 2?teaspoons Bragg?s Liquid Aminos or organic soy sauce (amount varies, depending on the broth you use)
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Tabasco or Louisiana hot sauce
Directions
Soak blackeyed peas overnight, or quick-soak according to package directions.
Drain and rinse the soaked blackeyes. Combine blackeyed peas, onion, garlic, thyme, bay leaves, Old Bay seasoning, and black pepper in your slow cooker. Stir in the melted vegan butter or coconut oil?and broth; the liquid should cover the blackeyes by about 1? to 1-1/2?. Splash in a bit more broth if needed (depending on the size of your slow cooker).
Cook on high heat for 1-1/2 hours.
After 1-1/2 hours, stir?in greens?a handful at a time, giving each bunch?a moment?to wilt before adding more. Cook for another 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours on high, until blackeyes are as done as you like them. To me, this dish works best when the?blackeyes and greens?are both?well?past al dente ??pretty soft, but not overshooting into mushy.
When you?re happy with the texture of the blackeyes and greens, stir in the liquid smoke, nutritional yeast, red wine vinegar, Bragg?s or organic soy sauce, and hot sauce. I personally recommend?fairly generous sprinklings of the hot sauce, Old Bay, and smoke flavoring!
Turn?the slow cooker heat?to low, to keep the greens and blackeyes warm for second helpings. Remove bay leaves, serve with sweet cornbread, and enjoy!
Production Notes
Makes about 6 large servings; preparation time: soak time plus 30 minutes; cooking time: 4 to 5 hrs.
This recipe works well as a make-ahead dish:?prep your?greens, soak the peas, and chop your garlic and onion the day before. Add the?spices and such on cooking day; and then just sit back and enjoy spending time with friends and family, while your slow cooker whips up a delicious dinner to start the year off right!

DETROIT (AP) ? Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears held on late against turnover-prone Detroit.
Now, the waiting begins.
Cutler threw for 257 yards and a touchdown and helped seal the game with a late scramble, and Chicago kept its playoff hopes alive ? for now ? with a 26-24 win over the Lions on Sunday.
The Bears (10-6) still need a Minnesota loss to Green Bay to reach the postseason. The win by Chicago eliminated the defending champion New York Giants from the playoff picture.
The Lions (4-12) lost their last eight games and turned the ball over four times in the finale. Calvin Johnson fell short in his attempt to become the first player with 2,000 yards receiving in a season.
Detroit trailed 20-3 late in the first half but pulled within two and had the ball at its own 9-yard line before a three-and-out forced a punt.
The Bears ran out the last 3:40, with Cutler's 19-yard run on third down keeping the drive going.
Johnson, who broke Jerry Rice's record of 1,848 yards receiving the previous weekend, finished at 1,964 after catching five passes for 72 yards.
Detroit's Matthew Stafford went 24 of 42 for 272 with three touchdowns and an interception.
The Lions scored two straight touchdowns to make it 20-17 in the third quarter, but Chicago ? which came into the game with a league-high 40 takeaways ? forced another turnover.
Stafford's fumble gave the Bears the ball at the Detroit 13. It was the fourth time the Bears started a drive inside the Detroit 25, and they ended up kicking a field goal.
Olindo Mare added another field goal, a 20-yarder with 10:47 left in the fourth, to make it 26-17. Stafford's 9-yard touchdown pass to Brian Robiskie pulled Detroit closer, but it wasn't enough.
Cutler threw a 55-yard pass to Alshon Jeffery to the Detroit 27 on Chicago's first play from scrimmage, delighting the many Chicago fans in attendance at Ford Field. But that drive stalled, and the Bears actually had to punt after Cutler fumbled on third down and the ball was recovered back at midfield.
After the Lions kicked a field goal, Chicago struck back when Cutler swung a pass out to Earl Bennett, who made the catch behind the line of scrimmage, got a block and outran the defense for a surprisingly easy 60-yard touchdown.
Joique Bell fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, and the Bears kicked a field goal. In the second quarter, Stafford fumbled deep in his own territory. Julius Peppers recovered for Chicago, and his short return gave the Bears the ball at the 10.
After a third-down pass interference call on safety Don Carey, Matt Forte scored on a 1-yard run to make it 17-3.
The Lions weren't done giving the ball away. Tim Jennings picked off Stafford's overthrown pass, and his 31-yard return to the Detroit 23 set up another field goal.
Stafford's 25-yard scoring pass to Kris Durham with 12 seconds left in the half made it 20-10, and he threw a 10-yarder in the third to Will Heller.

George H.W. Bush moved out of intensive care
HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush's condition continued to improve Saturday, prompting doctors to move him out of intensive care, a spokesman said.
"President Bush's condition has improved, so he has been moved today from the intensive care unit to a regular patient room at The Methodist Hospital to continue his recovery," family spokesman Jim McGrath said Saturday. "The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes."
Bush was hospitalized Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough. He was moved to intensive care at the Houston hospital on Dec. 23 after he developed a fever.
On Friday, McGrath said Bush had improved since arriving in the ICU. He said he was alert and in good spirits and was even doing some singing.
McGrath said Saturday morning that future updates on Bush's condition would be made as warranted.
Bush, the 41st president, is the country's oldest living former president by a few months.

Following The War Z?s ?Foundation Release? on Steam, a furor quickly arose because the game?s very description seemed to contain deliberately misleading falsehoods, and then this bumpy start was quickly followed by an undeniably disastrous interview with Gamespy where the game?s Executive Producer Sergey Titov tried to dismiss the controversy with pedantic obfuscation. That the galvanizing game was eventually removed from Steam probably surprised no-one, but that the clearly outspoken?Sergey Titov would refuse to lay low and let everything blow over, well, actually that will probably surprise even fewer people. It has now been more than two months since we launched public access to The War Z.?We?ve?definitely had our ups and downs, and I thought that this Holiday break was the right time for me to try to step back a little and think about our journey since it started. This may be a little long, but I would appreciate if you could stay with me for a few minutes as I try to go over the highlights of the game as well as some of the hurdles and controversies, how we have addressed that and what our plans are.
First of all?a very big and sincere ?Thank You!? to all of you. We are really proud of the community we have formed with you guys. Every day we have hundreds of thousands of players on our servers, and this is a life-changing event for the team and me. We are blessed to have you as members of the community and we are well aware that without you the game would be nothing.? Along with that thanks, though, I need to admit that we failed to effectively communicate some of our plans and actions to both our existing players and to our new prospective players. This failure to communicate resulted in some very negative feedback from some members of our community, but while it might be easy to label them as ?haters? or some other dismissive term, in all honesty this is my fault. ?I became arrogant and blinded by the early success and quick growth of The War Z, our increasing number of players, numbers we were getting from surveys, etc., and I chose not to notice the concerns and questions raised by these members of the game community as well as others.? This failure is entirely on my shoulders and if anything I owe thanks to that vocal minority and admit that I should have paid attention sooner. I chose instead to concentrate on the bigger picture ? my dream of turning The War Z from being a game developed by a small indie team into a large online venture, instead of addressing small things first and staying focused on the game issues. At the end my arrogance led us to the moment, when all those small things finally caught up and created a ?perfect storm? that affected all of our community members.? For that I?m truly sorry and apologize to all of our community as well as the larger PC gaming community that is not yet playing The War Z.
I do not take this situation lightly, and last week events were especially humbling for me. I?ve experienced a range of emotions, most of which centered on regret for not having addressed some of the issues differently than we did, but we can?t change the past. The only thing we can do is to be sure that we won?t repeat the same mistakes in the future. I have realized that as the leader of this ship, I missed all early warnings that were saying, ?Your community is not as happy as you think they are, you need to alter course.? I was too focused on how great we are and how a small independent team got their first game to over 700,000 users in a two-month period.? Though that is?something to be very proud of, allowing that to overshadow the existing community and their satisfaction was poor judgment.
I want to give you some insight into what our plans are for the future, but before we get to that, I?d like to clear the air with you on several important topics.
Community management and moderation ??the problem
Even since the early Alpha launch, this game has always cultivated a large and loyal player base that is very active in the game. Again, thank you for this. Unfortunately, we weren?t prepared for this large success and the way we managed the community was not the way it should?ve been. We relied too much on forum moderators, whose primary role was to punish those who break rules, not to engage the community and guide conversations into productive discussions about problems. There wasn?t enough presence of the development team on forums, there wasn?t enough updates on development of UPCOMING features. We failed to communicate our position and messaging on the outside platforms such as Facebook, twitter and various online websites, and when we did this we chose to rely more on arrogance rather than being humble and trying to understand why people were saying negative things. We chose to tune out negative reactions to the game, not paying enough attention to them ? and this, again, is my fault. We chose to rely too much on numbers ? percentage of refund requests, number and dynamic of our daily and monthly active users, etc. Well, in hindsight ? those things probably work well for more casual games, but the hardcore PC gaming community is much different and can be very vocal about what they feel. Even when the percentage of players with negative comments is small, as the community grows, even a small percentage can add up to be a very significant absolute number. And it?s not just a number ? those are real people with real issues they are having with the game. OP Productions (publisher for War Z) and me personally have failed to address those issues effectively.
Community management and moderation ??the solution!
We?re changing our community management procedures and rules right now. We?re going to reevaluate publishing and marketing team performance, and I will make sure that Hammerpoint Interactive developers will have a much stronger voice when it comes to community management and we won?t rely 100% on OP Productions to single handedly handle this. Lots of changes will be happening very fast in the weeks to come. One of the ideas that I proposed was to select 10 players from around the world who can represent the player community and invite them to our offices in Los Angeles, to meet the team, check out what we?re doing, and share with actual developers their concerns, wishes and thoughts on the game. We also will involve community, to a much higher degree, in the process of making our next map for the War Z (called ?California?). We?ll be discussing many of the aspects of the map with you and asking for feedback.
We?re revisiting our forum policies; we?re going to bring on an additional community management team, additional moderators and we?ll train them how to respond to things properly. There will still be restrictions on harassment, trash talk, etc. But we?ll make sure that every opinion is heard. At the same time, I must also be cautious: we cannot address all issues and there cannot be only one voice. Please accept that. With hundreds of thousands of players playing, talking, chatting, voicing their strong opinions, there will always be diverging opinions. And some issues that are minor ones are sometimes brought to light by very vocal channels. I would even say there is sometimes a beginning of controversy because the game is now so popular. So there is sometimes a distortion between the severity of the issue and the attention it gets. But we will clearly implement steps to better listen to the community.
What is Foundation Release?
The most asked question of the last week was ?is this the final release?? ?My answer has always been that for an online game a ?final? release means that the game is dead ? so there?s really no such thing, you never stop developing, making changes to and adding new features to the game. This is how we came to call the current version of The War Z ?Foundation Release.?? We launched the Foundation Release on December 17, 2012 as our first-stage release that we use as a foundation to build upon. It does include the core features and a fully playable environment. This is our version 1.0, and of course ?we will continue to improve that version as time goes on.? Did we rush to get it done? That is a tough question, but to answer honestly I think that we all pushed very hard to be first to market and in time for the holidays. Our entire team was working late, long hours to iron out issues and include as many features as possible.? This is part of the reality of being a smaller, independent game developer. If we had a larger team and more funding we?may?have done things differently, but I?m not sure. I don?t think it was a mistake because our numbers have been strong since day one and, even with the recent negativity, our metrics are really solid and we?ve been continuing to grow.? The negative opinions are always the most vocal, but most players are really enjoying the game and we?ve been attracting more and more daily active players every week.? A lot of the gaming journalists that have been playing the game have also given us some great feedback. I realize that we will take a few hits from some of the traditional gaming press in terms of review scores, but I?m hoping that even they will consider that this game is a living project that will continue to evolve as time goes on. We are very proud of our Foundation Release, and we do stand behind it like we have stood behind any previous version.
What?s on the Horizon?
As for what will happen next with The War Z? We?re currently evaluating the relationship between Hammerpoint and OP Productions.? I firmly believe that Hammerpoint should be playing a more prominent role in publishing/game operating process. We?re in a process of adding new key members to our team, bringing on guys who have much more experience operating and growing successful online games and I know this is going to make a huge difference in terms of development.? We?ll be making some big decisions in terms of leadership for both companies and I will personally change how I handle many things.? Above all we will continue to develop and make this game the best that it can be.
I know that to some people my words won?t matter much. I understand that. I hope that will change as we move forward and deliver the features that our players have been waiting for. I can promise you that from now on things will be much more transparent, and we?ll provide better communication and engage our community to discuss upcoming features way before they appear in the game.
I do believe that we aren?t even close to uncovering the true potential for The War Z, and I hope that in the coming year, we?ll be able to regain trust from people who were alienated by our actions and we?ll be able to move forward and grow the game together.

George Chanos: Even Fundamental Rights Are Subject to Certain Limitations
The unimaginable tragedy that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School will forever change who we are as Americans and what we stand for as a nation.
It was a tragedy that stole 26 innocent lives -- 20 of which, as hard as it is to imagine, were only 6- or 7-years-old. This horrific tragedy shocked the nation's collective conscience.
The gunman was a 20-year-old boy who, based on his actions and early reports, appears to have been mentally ill. He lived with his mother. A mother who owned, used and exposed her children to assault weapons. A mother who died from multiple gun shot wounds to the head, inflicted by her son, before he went on his killing spree.
We are now witnessing a national debate about why this happened. As this debate continues, advocates on all sides will argue the many causes that may have contributed to the unendurable losses at Newtown. The pervasive availability of assault weapons will rightfully lead the list of most who attempt to answer the question, "Why?" And these attempts to lay the blame on the accessibility of assault weapons, will be met with a deafening cry from those who understandably strive to protect our rights under the Second Amendment.
Gun advocates will argue, "Guns don't kill people -- people kill people." Gun control proponents will respond: "No. People with guns kill people." Many of each side's arguments have merit. Others will attempt to reframe or misdirect the focus of the debate. Still others will remain blinded by their ingrained prejudices, economic interests and/or deeply held beliefs. Emotions will run high and high-priced lobbyists, armed with political contributions, will run rampant. Ultimately, the battle to ban assault weapons will end at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Hopefully, the Justices will agree that even our most fundamental rights, such as those found in the Second Amendment, have certain essential and inherent limitations -- limitations which are necessitated by certain equally important rights, such as the rights of a 6-year-old to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Rights that are undeniably infringed upon, at least to some extent, by allowing unfettered rights under the Second Amendment. While the Second Amendment is and should always remain a fundamental right, it is not, cannot and should not be seen as an absolute right without limitation. Just as our First Amendment rights are subject to certain limitations so, too, must our Second Amendment rights be understood to be similarly limited.
A ban on assault weapons is a reasonable, necessary and appropriate limitation on our rights under the Second Amendment. It is a limitation that will help to protect, at least to some degree, the lives of our children. Limiting access to assault weapons will not prevent similar atrocities. At best, it may lessen the impact of similar killing sprees by reducing the number of lives lost. That alone is sufficient to justify a ban on assault weapons. But we need to understand that this will not solve the problem. This complicated, multidimensional problem will require an inspired, multifaceted solution.
It will require inspired thinking and unprecedented action. It will require a reconsideration of our approach to mental illness.
Our national obsession with violence will also need to be considered. It will require a reexamination of the commercial exploitation of violence in music, television and film. It will also require that we reassess the potential impact of violent video games on our children. School security protocols and school policies on physical and cyber bullying will need to be addressed. The smoldering problems of gang violence and youth unemployment will also require inspired solutions. This is by no means an exhaustive list. But it's a good start. All of these issues arguably contribute to the problem of violence in America.
As we search for a solution, other considerations will inevitably emerge. How proposed changes may affect our rights under the First Amendment and how we expect to fund necessary changes, given the state of our economy, will prove to be the primary obstacles. Partisan politics and the grotesque influence of money in politics will provide additional hurdles. We will see some action out of Washington, but it won't be enough. Yet even that must not deter us.
We are far from powerless as a people. But in order for our voices to be heard we must get involved in the debate. We alone ultimately control and bear responsibility for our future.
Some have asked, why didn't Adam Lanza simply take his own life, rather than kill his mother and 26 innocent victims, only to then take his own life? It has been suggested that many of those involved in mass shootings externalize their pain. They blame others for their suffering. What can we learn from that?
The lesson is as simple as it is important. Don't blame others for your misfortune. Accept responsibility for your condition. And teach your children to do the same. This was a lesson that was apparently lost on Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old Newtown shooter. And it is perhaps the most important lesson we can learn from the tragedy at Newtown.
If you don't want to live in a violent society, stop buying and exposing your children to guns. Stop buying your children violent video games. Stop allowing them to watch violent programing and listen to violent music. Stop allowing your children to bully other children and don't allow them to be the subject of bullying.
If you can't control your children -- seek help. Contact the health professionals at your children's schools. Speak to your child's pediatrician. Ask for help. Acknowledge the problem and do everything you can to address it.
And understand that your responsibility doesn't end there. If you don't agree with this nation's gun control laws, then demand that your elected representatives change them.
If your elected representatives are non-responsive to your needs, then vote them out of office. If you don't want lobbyists stealing your country then demand comprehensive, publicly funded, campaign finance reform.
In sum, accept responsibility for your condition and do something about it. Don't blame others. And, teach your children to do the same.
