BBQ'ing In Hongcheon ????? (Hongcheon, Korea) | hamatama

Hongcheon ???? is a county, surrounded by mountains and farmland, in the province of Gangwon ?????.

We took a two hour trip outside of Seoul to a friend?s weekend home. ?After an afternoon of shopping for food and drinks, we later set up two barbecue grills and got to work on grilling the Pork Neck Meat ??????, Pork Belly ?????, Flank Steak ????? and Polish Sausages ????? ???? accompanied by Kimchi ????, Kimchi Jjigae ??????, salads and a never ending stock of Soju ???? (a yam based spirit), Makgeoli ????? (fermented unfiltered rice wine similar to Japan?s ?Nigori Sake?), Chungha ???? (clear rice wine similar to Japan?s ?Sake?) and Beer ????. ?Pork Neck Meat???????, which is common in Korea but not so common in the U.S. is a very tender, moist and juicy cut of pork perfect all kinds of preparation methods. ?It is the ultimate cut of meat to make a great pork chop.

Of note, the Napa cabbage used to make the Kimchi ???? was grown on the small farmed area behind the house and made at home. ?Due to the freshness of the cabbage and the great cooking methods used, it was one of the most delicious Kimchi ???? I?ve had in recent memory. ?Also, in Korea, burned wood chips which is known as Sut ??? is used instead of charcoal which is typically used in grilling in the U.S. ?Sut ??? is in my opinion the best of both worlds because it provides the smokey wood flavor in traditional southern barbecuing while providing a hot enough flame to grill.

After six hours of eating and drinking, everyone was stuffed beyond belief and we all had a great time. ?I?ve been a city boy most of my life and it was a refreshing change of pace to be out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by mountains, farmland and crisp, clean air.
