???????The Matchmaker, the Apprentice, and the Football Fan collects eight stories by Zhu Wen; all except one were first published between 1993 and 1999 (with 'The Wharf', an outlier set in Tibet, first published in 2009). All the stories from the 1990s are narrated in the first person and are, to varying degrees, confessional. 'Mr. Hu, are you coming out to play basketball this afternoon ?' is the most obviously so, the narrator beginning his account by explaining that he wants to: &quotclarify everything that has happened;" (but claiming he doesn't want to try justify what he has done) even as the exact nature of his shocking transgression is only revealed at the very end of his story.
???????Most of the narrators are of Zhu's generation, at university in the late 1980s, some taking to the streets "during the spring of 1989" -- but also just as quickly retreating. In the most overtly political of the stories, 'Reeducation', the class of 1989 is deemed, a decade on, not to have met the nation's expectations, and an entire generation is summoned back to school (and then out into some great unknown) in best Cultural Revolution-style for re?ducation -- "to begin anew the process of forging us into rustless screws" in what is called Operation Rebake. Yet Zhu's stories tend to be retrospective, the narrators looking back -- and so too even in 'Reeducation', where the narrator describes how he has cut himself off from all ties with the state bureaucracy (and his old classmates) and hopes to escape Operation Rebake "by remaining quietly in the shadows", only to find his past catching up with him in the present-day (while then the exact nature of Operation Rebake and what awaits them all remains untold).
???????Zhu's narrators tend to be loners, with women kept at some distance, the focus in their relationships on sex rather than intimacy (though they are not always able to escape the women's clutches). Yet people from outside family -- former classmates, for example -- are often significant figures, accompanying the characters, in one way or another, over extended periods of time. So also in 'Xiao Liu' the narrator writes about this eponymous character who was a student of his mother's during the Cultural Revolution; despite the fact that he was instructed to spy on the family, the mother was fairly supportive of him over the years and he remained close to the family.
???????Zhu has a vigorous style and exerts a welcome firm command over what seem, in summary, often very meandering (over great distances and periods of time) stories; despite roaming so far all over the place -- like his often aimless protagonists -- these are tight and well-structured tales. There's no predictable arc to most of the stories, either -- 'Mr. Hu [...]' being an exception, even as in its roundabout presentation the punch of the ending is no less effective -- and Zhu presents an interesting variety of characters who, even if not entirely sympathetic, are intriguing. Many of the stories capture a specific Chinese generation, and those who never quite moved beyond their college years (even if they believe otherwise) particularly well -- an interesting glimpse of modern China. ('The Wharf', dealing with different circumstances and longings -- an architect who wants to see his creation, and a caretaker stuck in the boondocks (and his efforts to raise a pig) --, narrated in the third person, and with a very different sort of conclusion, is an odd (not-quite-)fit for the collection -- though admittedly the ending does make for a fine finishing flourish for the book.)
???????Julia Lovell's translation seems to capture Zhu's strong narrative voices very well -- but there are some occasional jarring choices, most notably: "What Facebook was to the Winkelvoss twins the King of Faucets was to Xiao Liu" -- it simply doesn't ring right (and obviously wasn't what Zhu wrote in this story first published in 1999).
???????The Matchmaker, the Apprentice, and the Football Fan presents only a slice of modern, post-Maoist Chinese life, but it's a solid, well-written collection and certainly offers some interesting glimpses of life in modern China. Worthwhile.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's national security team argued Wednesday to keep its sweeping domestic surveillance powers intact, even as it acknowledged some limitations appear inevitable.

Facing unexpectedly harsh opposition from both parties over a once-secret program that sweeps up the phone records of every American, the Obama administration said it wanted to work with lawmakers who seemed intent on putting limits on that authority.

"We are open to re-evaluating this program in ways that can perhaps provide greater confidence and public trust that this is in fact a program that achieves both privacy protections and national security," Robert Litt, counsel to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, told skeptical members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The hearing came one week after a surprisingly close vote in the House that would have killed the phone surveillance program. It barely survived, but lawmakers promised that change was coming.

This newest privacy-vs.- security debate was touched off when former government contract systems analyst Edward Snowden leaked classified documents exposing National Security Agency programs that store years of phone records on every American. That revelation prompted the most significant reconsideration yet of the vast surveillance powers Congress granted the president after 9/11.

The administration intended to keep the telephone program a secret forever and, for more than a decade, few in Congress showed any interest in reining in the surveillance. Snowden's leaks abruptly changed the calculus on Capitol Hill.

"We have a lot of good information out there that helps the American public understand these programs, but it all came out late," Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., said in a rebuke of government secrecy. "It all came out in response to a leaker. There was no organized plan for how we rationally declassify this so that the American people can participate in the debate."

The telephone program is authorized under a provision of the USA Patriot Act, which Congress hurriedly passed after 9/11.

The Obama administration says phone records are the only records being collecting in bulk under that law, but it has left open the ability to create similar databases of people's credit card transactions, hotel records and Internet searches.

Several Democrats promised bills that would provide tighter controls or more transparency. Proposals include eliminating the FBI's ability to seize data without a court order, changing the way judges are appointed to the surveillance court, and appointing an attorney to argue against the government in secret proceedings before that court. Another would force the government to reveal how many Americans have had their information swept up in surveillance.

On Wednesday, the national security establishment sought to reassure Congress that its surveillance powers were rigorously monitored and narrowly crafted while simultaneously leaving open the possibility of some new limitations.

To that end, the administration declassified documents about the telephone program. But the documents revealed no legal analysis that underpinned the widespread surveillance. And the redacted documents show only in broad strokes how NSA officials use the data.

For the first time, however, the government acknowledged publicly that using what it calls "hop analysis," it can analyze the phone calls of millions of Americans in the hunt for just one suspected terrorist. That's because NSA analysts can look at not just a suspect's phone records, but also the records of everyone he calls, everyone who calls those people and everyone who calls those people.

If the average person calls 40 unique people, three-hop analysis could allow the government to mine the records of 2.5 million Americans when investigating one suspected terrorist. The Obama administration has

Last week's House vote of 217-205 defeating an attempt to dismantle the program was significant not only because of the narrowness of the victory for the Obama administration, but also because it created unusual political coalitions. Libertarian-leaning conservatives and liberal Democrats pressed for change against the Republican establishment and Congress' pro-security wing.

Backing the NSA program were 134 Republicans and 83 Democrats, including House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, who typically does not vote, and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. Rejecting the administration's last-minute pleas to spare the surveillance operation were 94 Republicans and 111 Democrats.

The point of analytics isn't really to see where your traffic come from organically (you can get that from your server logs / webmaster tools), it is to understand when you get traffic, segmented by type of traffic, how they engage with your site, so using measurements you can gain insights so you can improve the sites performance in terms of its objectives (in your case mainly sales I presume) Last edited by llocally; Yesterday at 21:56.

Google are trying to control keywords, their latest trick is to pretty much ensure that no referrer data is passed when anyone is logged into or using ANY Google product. This is a massive issue at the moment because of course Google are acting illegally currerntly, both with their privacy policy and their actual physical privacy settings. The EU have told google there must be a single soplitary 'log me out' button that logs users out of EVERYTHING! Being an Indiana University football fan requires infinite patience.

A dash of irrational exuberance would also be helpful.

You need to suspend reality to describe last year?s 4-8 record as progress even though it includes two conference victories, the most for the Hoosiers since 2007.

Diehard fans would have to time travel to 1993 to unearth IU?s last winning record in Big Ten play. Those overachievers won five conference games before most of the current student body was just a gleam in their daddy?s eye. Thank you, Bill Mallory.

So, why should fans get excited about the coming season? They could point to IU?s aerial attack, which ranked No. 1 in the conference, returns three quarterbacks who could start for many D-I programs and five receivers closing in on 1,000 career yards.

?There?s a buzz,? said Mark Barenie, a past Post-Tribune golf champion who attended his first Big Ten football media days last week in Chicago.

No doubt he was thinking about 20 returning starters from a dedicated doormat which could have gone 8-4 simply by sprinkling 14 more points in near-misses against Ball State, Michigan State, Ohio State and Navy.

I didn?t have the heart to remind him that holdovers included eight starters from a Swiss-cheese defense which gave up 35-plus points a game and also bottomed out in rushing (231.4) and passing (232.2).

?Quite frankly, it was embarrassing,? IU coach Kevin Wilson said.

It was the price he paid for introducing 32 freshmen (including redshirts), more than any other program. Here?s the rub. They?re still greener than most of their Big Ten rivals.

?We?ve only got four seniors in our two-deeps,? said wide receiver Kofi Hughes. ?We?re more experienced, but still young.?

Hughes comes into the season with 85 catches for 1,217 career yards, but understands that touchdowns, not real estate, produce bowl teams.

?We got a lot of yardage, but the points didn?t match the yards,? Hughes said. ?Not to excuse the losses, but we could have punched it in a few more times in the red zone.?

To address defensive shortcomings the IU staff brought in 15 of its 23 recruits from that side of the line. Clearly though, the Hoosiers will have to rely on offensive dynamics to qualify for only their second bowl in the last two decades.

A favorable schedule should help. Their first five games are at home, meaning they won?t leave Bloomington until Michigan State on Oct. 12.

?It?s a plus, having eight home games, especially being a senior,? said senior Greg Heban, a walk-on who started 10 games last season and led the Hoosiers in tackles.

?There?s a little clock ticking inside my head,? the veteran safety said. ?This is it. We want to put Hoosier Nation on the same pedestal as basketball (Big Ten champs), soccer (national champs) and baseball (College World Series).?

Their success puts pressure on football to join the party.

We?ve got to get our act together,?? Heban said. ?It?s up to the defense to stop the run and the secondary needs to create a lot more turnovers.?

No matter who plays quarterback, the Hoosiers should provide entertainment value. Cam Coffman (2,744 yards, 15 TDs), medical redshirt Tre Roberson (who started twice before breaking his leg) and Nate Sudfeld (632 yards, seven TDs) are playmakers.

Wilson vouches for an intact offensive line, which gave up only 17 sacks.

?There?s a lot of upside there,? he said, his raspy voice threatening to shut down. ?When you throw 544 times that ain?t bad,?

Who will be throwing? Probably Roberson because of his mobility, but don?t be suprised if Wilson puts two quarterbacks on the field at the same time.

There aren?t enough footballs to keep all three happy so Sudfeld or Coffman might be redshirted.

?It?s a dead-heat,? said Wilson, explaining why he didn?t bring a quarterback to the Big Ten media days.

A 4-0 start would create some badly needed momentum, something the Hoosiers haven?t accomplished since 1986. They open conference play on Oct. 5 against visiting Penn State. They?re 0-16 against the Nittany Lions.

?We?re not looking that far ahead, but will be excited to play them,? said Heban, who switched from baseball in his freshman year despite a 90-mph fastball.

Kicker Mitch Ewald has already put 2012 on the backburner. It?s so over.

?I?m not even talking about it,? he said. ?We?re moving on.?

Hopefully in the right direction. Even the Pittsburgh Pirates appear to have finally figured it out after two decades in the dumpster.

Sony and Panasonic ally to launch next-generation 300GB optical discs

During the heyday of optical storage we saw a 400GB Blu-Ray flavor (shown above) and even 1TB discs in the lab, but lately such development has waned. Sony and Panasonic have teamed up to move things along, however, saying there's a need for reliable long-term storage that only optical disks can provide. The pair will develop a "next-generation standard for professional-use optical discs," saying that a 300GB flavor could be ready in two years or so. Though geared towards industries like cloud storage and digital cinema at first, the tech could eventually trickle down to consumers, too. Given rapid developments in on-demand streaming and cloud gaming, however, there might be nothing left for us plebes to archive by then.

New York Public Library Fighting to Retrieve Baseball Artifacts Stolen by Thieves and Sold Online

Baseball artifacts stolen 40 years ago from the main branch of the New York Public Library are popping up online, and the FBI appears as stumped as a grade-schooler deciphering the Dewey Decimal System.

The library is missing several hundred relics donated by baseball magnate Albert Spalding?s widow in 1921 ? including a $50,000 photo of the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, ancient baseball cards and letters to and from one of baseball?s founding fathers, Harry Wright.

The missing materials ? including score sheets from baseball?s first game in 1846 between the Knickerbockers and the New York Nine, and the constitution of Brooklyn?s Excelsior baseball club from 1865 ? are worth more than $1 million, memorabilia blogger Peter Nash estimated.

The FBI launched an investigation into the ballgame bygones in 2009, confiscating 25 lots of letters from Pennsylvania-based sports memorabilia dealer Hunt Auctions.

Now the library is playing hardball to get its property back and is exploring legal options against consignors.

?The New York Public Library has made it extremely clear that it wants all of its materials returned and made accessible to the public, where they belong,? said spokeswoman Angela Montefinise.

CLEVELAND (AP) ? A talk radio host who invited a woman held captive in a Cleveland home for a decade to a music festival says he was as surprised as anyone when she showed up.

Shane French told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Sunday that he issued an impromptu invitation to Amanda Berry on his show a few weeks ago but didn't know she was listening. The host of Rover's Morning Glory on WMMS in Cleveland says he could tell Berry was overwhelmed by the crowd's cheers when she accompanied him onstage.

Berry's appearance came a day after her abductor, Ariel Castro, pleaded guilty in the case.

It was the first time Berry had appeared publicly since her rescue with two other women also held captive by Castro.
