Summer Baseball: Milford Legion sweeps away Grafton Hill

Milford?s Mike Tracy threw a two-hit shutout while striking out eight and walking two as visiting Post 59 eliminated Grafton Hill with a 4-0 victory at Tivnan Field in Worcester on Wednesday night in the second game of their best-of-three Zone 4 Legion playoff series.

Andy McMillan went 1-for-2 with three stolen bases and two runs scored, while Kevin Martinis finished 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for Post 59.

Milford (24-4) will host a Western Mass. team (TBA) at Fino Field on Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Intrastate Sectional tournament.

ASHLAND 4, MEDFORD 3: In a Zone 5 matchup, Brendan Thurber hit a game-winning, walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Ashland (13-6) over visiting Medford as Post 77 remained in contention for a state playoff berth.

Ashland hosts Malden on Thursday in its regular season finale starting at 5:45 p.m. Post 77 is looking to finish in the top four of Zone 5 to qualify for the state playoffs.

"This was a huge win for us," said Ashland manager Dan Sullivan. "This keeps us in the hunt for one more night anyway. We have to win (vs. Malden) and we?ll need some help."

With the game tied 3-3, Ben Pelleiko led off the Ashland seventh with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third and on Kyle Goulet?s ground out before scoring the winning run on Thurber?s hit.

Trailing 1-0, Ashland moved in front with two runs in the fourth. Chris Moberg?s RBI double brought in Kevin Guiliano and then Moberg scored on Palleiko?s sac fly.

After Medford tied it 2-2 in the fifth, Post 77 retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Goulet scored on a wild pitch. Medford tied it 3-3 in the top of the seventh.

Ashland starter Evan Park worked 6 2/3 innings, scattering 10 hits, allowing three earned runs and two walks while striking out four. With runners on second and third, reliever Ben Smith got the last out of the game on a line out to second to notch the win.

Senior Babe Ruth

MEDWAY 5, HOLLISTON 2 (8 INN.): Connor Quinn had three hits, including a two-run double in the eight inning, as visiting second-seeded Medway ousted third-seeded Holliston by sweeping their Central Mass Senior Babe Ruth South opening round playoff series in two games.

Medway (11-10) advances to play Bellingham in the South final series. Holliston finished the summer at 6-14-1.

Medway starter Ethan Mick threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and Kevin Bergeron had three hits, including two doubles and two RBIs. Mick?s suicide squeeze bunt plated Quinn with the third run in the eighth.

Trailing 2-0, Holliston scored its first run in the fourth when Tyler Perry tripled and came home in the fourth. Holliston tied it in the sixth when Andrew Salant scored on an error.

Holliston starter Mike Galeaz pitched a complete game and Doug Flynn had the team?s other hit.

Drew Harris was a defensive standout behind the plate for Medway.

BELLINGHAM 4, MILFORD 1: Joe Mangine allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out nine as Bellingham (16-4-1) defeated Milford (5-16) to sweep the CMSBR South playoff series in two games.

Mangine drove in the eventual game-winning run with a triple in the fourth inning to make it 2-1. Cori Boucher hit an RBI single in the third to tie the game 1-1 for Bellingham.

Sean Postler went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while James Perro finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a RBI single in the sixth inning.

Jeff Besozzi hit an RBI double in the second inning to score Eric Abruzzi for Milford?s lone run.

SUDBURY 9, ASHLAND 4: Cam Waggener threw a complete game, striking out five, as third-seeded host Sudbury (15-6) won a CMSBR North playoff game against second-seeded Ashland (15-6), tying the best-of-three series.

The deciding third game will be Thursday in Ashland.

Also for Sudbury, Matt Broadbent had two doubles, two runs and three RBIs, while Tommy Novick added two hits, two RBIs and a run. Dylan DeFlorio chipped in with two hits and an RBI, while Kieran Pathak had two hits, two runs and an RBI.

For Ashland, Nick Cunningham had a double and a run, while John Ciampaglia had a double, single and two runs.

MEDFIELD 7, FRAMINGHAM 2: Sam Chapin hits a two-run double in the first inning and finished with three RBIs, and Justin Hirschfeld had hits with a double and two RBIs as top-seeded Medfield (16-4) beat fourth seed and host Framingham (11-9-1) in their CMSBR North opening round playoff series.

John McMahon worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks and striking out for the win for Medfield, which led 3-1 before pulling away with four runs in the fourth.

Framingham starter Nick Cronin pitched a solid game and Tristen Perez had two hits and scored a run for the Flyers.

Defending CMSBR champion Medfield plays the Ashland/Sudbury winner in the North finals.
